(not sure if this is the right section, but i thought id introduce myself)helloo, my names nathan I'm 19 and from london, as you can see from my post count I'm new lol, i drive a 1.2 clio but I'm almost certain that my next car is a polo gti, I'm not sure on the model but its the 00-02 one :S anyway, i wanted to know, what can you expect from a polo with the right parts, and how would it compare to a clio 172/182?? anyone on here with tuned one? (non race car) thanks :-)

Performance wise, the 172/182 is a faster car, it handles better and the general malarky.

The Polo is comfortable and looks great, especially with leather.

Both cars could easily cost you you're liscence so either way the choice is yours.

If you would like stright line performance, and don't mind a lack of creature comforts for the sake of shock horror fun to unsuspecting victims then may I recommend the Polo G40 supercharged coupe?

Easily tuneable and will cost far less to buy. Decent power increases for a small cost, 150 bhp can be achieved relatively easily for less than £1,000. May not sound much but in a car that weighs 800kg's thats a lot.

although i love g40's its blatently not a suitable choice for someone looking at 172's & gti's.

The 172 is a nice car and although the build quality is shite its over a 1sec faster to 60 than a gti and handles alot better.

Saying that though i went and got a polo gti and didnt regret it, personally I love the look of them, by far the nicest looking polo IMO. It's nippy enough to enjoy the drive & has a great spec: xenons, heated leathers (extra), bbs splits etc.....It's also nice to have a car that stands out and not everyone has one (only 3000 were imported into the u.k). I also fell in love with the interior with its blue dash, beats the crap out of my cupras

The only worry really is the gearbox that people have had issues with, i swapped mine a few months back and had it for over a year with no gearbox problems whatsoever and i drove the car quite hard. If you want a nice one tomo is selling a silver one, its had alot of tasteful mods done to it, and unlike mine he's had a few engine mod's done to it so its around 140bhp which i imagine is quick enough to play with 172's

you should really talk to danthemanpologti on uk-polos as he bought a 172 and had a gti, hes now trying to get it swapped back lol

yeah, iv always liked the look of the polo, evn tho its a 1.6 iv noticed that they do have potential, and seem more reliable, with a clio u do get problems as u do with all cars, but i dont want to buy a new car and the next day I'm going to be thinking about what i need to fix

my car has a 15month gearbox warranty!! haha and is in perfect running order...

like james said though, the clio is probably faster but will be more expensive to run and doesnt look as good.

Polo GTI has problems with pedal box and gearbox. VW won't always repair those for free either.

Pedal box itself is £350 + 3 hours labor I think. Main dealer labor isn't going to be cheap either...!

Dunno how much they charge for a gearbox rebuild but the box itself on an exchange basis (IE You take your old box and they give you a new one) is around £1,200. But you can get it rebuilt for a fraction of that price. But still worth thinking about and factoring into the price you pay for the car.

Pedal box will still get done for free on a GTI. If it doesn't, then the dealer is a cock

Some of the dealers try and get around this but just keep at them and they will fix the pedal box free of charge!! They tried to worm out of fixing the lupo pedal box but just kick up a fuss and call as many numbers as possible. In the end all for free!! :-)

Yea i made lots of calls to get the loop sorted and in the end, the guy from VW customer care office called me to apologise for not listening to me straight away!! It took a lot of convincing them but in the end it saved me £500...

yup pedal box is done for free at VW so isnt an issue, and the gearbox rebuilds cost around 800 including fitting
