Under the dash in the newer cars there's a port that you stick your special cable into. Plug it into your computer and you need some special software which is the "VAGcom" stuff I think. Then you can fiddle about with your ECU, get some fault codes off, set off your airbags, that kind of thing I think. But just what I've picked up - I've got no experience of it sorry.

It's next to no use on anything before a Mk4 though. You can plug a GT into it, but it won't tell you much of use, and nohing that you couldn't find out with a £2 multimeter.

This kind of depends what you call useful I guess but I've got VAG-COM and the required lead for my mk3 (1.3 spi - mono-motronic) and get plenty of info from it - apart from ECU fault codes you can also see various info including engine temp, air intake temp, throttle position, lambda factor, load factor, rpm and a few others I can't remember (unfortunately NOT roadspeed). You can see all of the above in graph form and save it to file to look at later which could be useful I guess, although I accept that you can find out a lot of it from the gauges!

Depends what you want to use the data for I suppose, but you can get a fair amount of info from a mk3!

I've just got a little ecu fault code reader and its actually quite good,,,,brought some up on mine,,,didnt solve the poppy one though.

I have Full Version of VAGCOM...

Its very useful for newer cars...bleeding the ABS Brakes via a computer is quite fun

So yeah its a good tool...For people who knows how to use it properly...not just to check and clear some fault code

I don't know how to use it but I know can be useful when your stupid car gives you a 'check' light and nothing more to go on
