Basically the guy said it was 180bhp did an insurance quote on it and it came up as 125bhp, are the older models with tubro's just less powerful comapred to lets say a 2001 car? Were larger turbo's used on the later cars? Also isnt that exhaust off a v6?

I can't see the ebay link cos i can't access it at work. The Golf 1.8T's only came in 156bhp and 180bhp. And yup the newer models came in 180bhp, i'm not sure from which year they came in but they did come in 180bhp.

Also, if you got a remap on either Golf, 156 or 180, they would both still have the same power outputs. They both use the same K03 turbo. It's only the ECU's in the car that makes them different regarding performance.

The Golf Anniversary Edition has a K03S turbo which is also 180bhp but if you get it remapped it will have a higher power output as it uses a different turbo.

He's right. ALL Golf MK4 1.8T GTI's only came in 150bhp apart from the 25th Anniversary Editions which came with 180bhp or alternatively a 150bhp TDI engine but that's beside the point.

If you want the 180bhp but not an Anniversary (because of high mileage & price), go for a Audi A3 1.8T Quattro. The A3 1.8T Quattros came in 180bhp but it HAS TO BE the Quattro version.

It's true. The MK4 is notoriously poor with handling, balance & power! It's actually surprising to see alot of MK4 GTI's still wanted seeing as it's just so bad really.

As tomo87 said, you want the one with the bigger turbo. Now the S3 1.8T has a K04 turbo which produces that crazy amount of 210/225bhp.

Now the A3 1.8T Quattro/GTI 25th Anniversary 1.8T 180bhp has either:

a) K03 - tuned to 180bhp.

or

b) K03s - 180bhp standard.

off topic:

c) K04 - 210/225 from an S3/CupraR etc

Difference between K03 & K03s are:

- 8 blades opposed to 12 on TIP

- Compressor housing is 39.5ml opposed to 37ml

- K03s Turbos have 0052/0053 in the serial number and they usually are 704D/704S/704T

- Larger main vein and larger contiunation

Thanks for all the help guys, having driven a mk4 1.8t yeasterday i felt it had power but didnt have the handling to match. I have just started looking into getting an audi a3 1.8t gonna try to get a quatro if i can afford one as there 180bhp.

But its more likely i will just get a sport which has 150. For some reason a3's compared to mk4's are acutally cheaper when it comes to the 1.8t. I think there less common too which is definately what I'm after.

Dont see many nicely moded, but found one i liked..

Cant believe that car is now back to standard to my knowledge..
