If you have an old car (mk2/mk3) and it's dirty, it's considered a heap (and other motorists may not be so cautious around you as they perceive you as not giving a shit). If it's clean, it may be considered a little better and people may pay more care to avoid having someone very enthusiastic gutting them in the aftermath of a careless swipe.

Newer cars, as we know, are more expensive and are watched like hawks by people wanting to avoid big insurance hits.

That is pretty much what I mean.

When I first got my Mk3 it looked like shit!

Was dirty as fook, and just didn't look good. My local garage thought I'd gone downhill as usually when I take a car to them its tidy and some old hag crashed into me and didn't care that she had damaged my car because "its old and nakered anyway"

After a few months of owning it, I cleaned it up and was happy with it and everyone who saw it was impressed with how tidy it was for a 15 year old car.

What I'm saying is I get a good sense of achievement and feel better about driving a car if it looks tidy. Just like you'd feel better about yourself if you have really spruced yourself up for a night out etc.

It was good last/this year, really funny camping with the scottish lot
