hi, I've got a 6n2 1.4 mpi and the engine sounds like a diesel most of the time. can anyone shed any light of how to cure this problem and stop people thimking my car is a diesel when in fact its a petrol! cheers

Don't Mk5's have maintenance-free tappets like the Lupo?

Try pumping the gas pedal slowly in and out twice before starting up.

Other that that I can only assume you have cheap engine oil in your car, try using Castrol GTX which VW recommend.

If that still doesn't work than you are after new Tappets matey.

cheers for advice, ill try castrolGTX on the next oil change, but theres no point of me changing the tappets for new ones as I'm getting a new engine in june, so i only have to put up with it for a few more months. cheers :-)

Hydraulic (maintenance free) tappets have been fitted to all Polo engines since 1986 or so.

Pumping the throttle has got fuck all to do with the tappets. Its more likely the tappets have got dirt stuck in them which is preventing them from filling with oil. This increases the valve clearances and causes the rattle.

You may be lucky and get away with engine oil flush and an oil change using decent quality oil and a new filter.

Mine is 6n2 1.4 mpi too and I've alway thought it sounded a bit like a diesel especially when its idling. Someone told me this is characteristic of the VW engines. When i got it i dont know what oil it had in but I've put quantum in now (VW own brand) this hasnt made a difference in noise really. This is not a problem to me i just thought id mention it. My car has been looked after quite well by the first owner (and me), i am not having any problems. :-D

Obviously you may expect some noise with very high mileage but generally they should be quiet.

Unless its very rattly, I wouldn't worry though.

If its an akk engine and its noisey it will need a new bottom end unfortunately
