Hey just about to buy an audi a3 the older model 8L body. Just want to know if there rear wheel drive? I'm going for a 1.8T. Drove an automatic one today, unbeliable power for a relatively small engine. :-D

Also i have noticed some of the cars have a cable running off the inlet i believe its called, and the later cars dont have this. Are the newer cars fitted with better turbos?

They'll be front-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive depending on the model if memory serves.

The cable in that picture is a throttle cable.

Some of the 1.8t engines were drive-by-wire, i.e. instead of a mechanical cable link (as in your picture) between the accelerator pedal and throttle body on the engine, it's done electronically with a sensor on the pedal and a motor on the throttle body. The ECU then decides how much to open the throttle by for you.

There are no rear wheel drive Audi's, they are all either front wheel drive or quattro.

Try and buy a later A3 (they have the one piece headlamps with the indicators moulded in), as early ones tend to be pretty hanging and dont drive that nice.

Also make sure its had a new cambelt, as we get a lot of 1.8T's in the workshop due to cambelt snapping early (usually around 60k) Hope this helps

Yup, all Audi 1.8T's came with the K03 turbo whereas the S3's came with the K04. Early S3's came with 210bhp and newer ones came with 225bhp.

i thought most 80's audis were rear wheel drive due to the engine lay out, seems i was wrong.

It is strange...but if you are offering Quattro on your cars then it perhaps makes more sense.

IIRC Turbo depends on the car, A3's upto W reg had KO3, X reg up to the new shape had KO3s and the new model had KO4

KO3 will be tuned upto about 190bhp with no mods, my mate has KO3s, and he's running just under 250bhp, KO4's I'm not sure on.

sorry dude, but how do you tune a K03 turbo with no mods? K03's are 156bhp standard. You need a remap to see approx 200bhp on a K03.

You sure about that... i'm sure only the 1.8T Quattro (late 2000 and up) had the KO3s which produced 180bhp as opposed to 150bhp by the 1.8T FWD (all years)...

Yep, the KO3 is still used in the 180bhp A3 quattros and TT 180's, the KO4 is only fitted to the S3 and TT 225 (BAM, AMK engine codes etc) and also in the TT sport 240.

180 A3 quattros are'nt any quicker than the front wheel drive versions, mainly because of the extra weight of the quattro system. More things on them to go wrong imo.

Old audi 80's, A4, A6 and A8 and Passats are all longitudinaly mounted engines with a longditunaly mounted gearbox's

A2, A3 and TT's are transverse mounted and transverse mounted gearbox's.

ko4's see around 280bhp when fully taken advantage of, so little more than the ko3s unfortunately
