Basically sometime next year I'll be getting rid of my GT for something more powerful.

My dad has an old ('95) Audi Coupe 2.0 16V.

What you guys think of these? Do you know any specs?

And is it the same lump as the MK3 Golf Gti 16v?

Oh.. And does anyone know any Decent audi forums?

The mid-90's ones weren't an out and out sports car, they're basically a 2 door audi 80. Which in my view is no bad thing at all, as the 80 is a brilliant car (I've nearly bought one several times and haven't for daft reasons). Main thing you have to worry about on them is bad history, ie people who bought them to drive like a UB Quattro, but if you're thinking about having your dad's then you know where it's been.

A mate of mine had a '91 Coupe 2.2E.

It was a superb car inside, very luxurious and well made. Even though it was quite old it still felt very solid and had worn its 130k very well.

The 5 cyl. engine sounded lovely too, but to be honest performance was only fair considering the amount of petrol it drank. They are heavy old things and are great long distance cruisers rather than being sporty.

Yeah, I know what they are like to drive etc.

I've borrowed my dads a fare few times.

It is a big whale.

Its blue, with leather, ABS, power steering, full electrics, oil/temp gauges etc etc. 90k. Its been looked after, its just starting to get tired now. He looks after his cars, but not to the standard of an enthusiast. A good service, a few interior bulbs, a polish a hoover will sort it out.

Its no way near as nippy as my GT. Like you said breadman, its a long distance cruiser.

I'm thinking, coilovers, new zorst and some nice engine mods could make it feel nippy. Hence why i'm looking into it now. if its the same lump as the GTi I know most engine things will be readily availible for the right price!

Save up and buy an S2 if your hell bent on the Audi Coupe, all the same things as you have said, nice & comfy but with a bit of kick with the 6 speed box & bigger lump....can be had now for not alot of money

The 2.6 engines were also slow and a bit of a let down

I tried one in an 80 avant, it wasn't great off the mark, but ok past 60/70....... errrr, so I'm told anyway

Haha, no offence to anyone, but if he's asking about his dads car, then its likely theres a reason for that - he probably didnt want to know about other cars and engines! I'm not having a go, its useful stuff to know, but still amuses me about this forum.

Get some pics of the car before you come back here dude. How about running costs mate? Won't it be a fair sight more than the GT? Worth thinking about with uni funds lol. Could look cool though if its the car I'm thinking of!

The 2.0 16v from the Audis is used in Mk2 GTI conversions I'm sure - so it is definately tuneable. In standard form in a heavy car they aren't bad, but you haven't lived until you've heard in a mega spec VW 2.0 16v - they sound immense! There are a couple running around 200 bhp, obviously with cams and ITBs, but 160 bhp-ish isn't a hard target to hit.

They were detuned from the factory so they didn't step on the VR6's toes, so in standard form they are pretty much unbreakable as they are under hardly any strain at all. The bottom ends are good for short bursts of 8000 rpm - but the heads (specifically the hydraulic tappets) start giving up at anywhere above the stock limiter.

I'd been looking at buying and had a shot of a 16v Passat GT, although these are only the 1.8, they are probably similar performance to the Audi. Off the mark, they are poo. Once you are hoofing along though, on the country lanes, the engine is in it's power band nearly all the time, and you can trundle along in 4th with enough oomph to get out of the tightest bends. 16vs do not lack torque, but you'd think they do the amount of times 8v owners say the 16vs are crap low down I've driven a 16v GTI and been passenger in an 8v GTI and the biggest difference is the power delivery, the 16vs still pick up below 3000 rpm or so.

the audi 2.0 16v is the 6a, which is basically the same as the 2.0 9a used in the passat gt and corrado 2.0 16v. the one they de tuned is the abf, which is the 2.0 16v found in the mk3 golf. its all confusing

yes the 1.8 is kr. direct swop for 9a/6a block in mk2 etc 16v conversions. the abf block is 16mm taller so isnt an easy swop but is done quite often. the abf also has full electronic injection. whereas the others are k-jet.

not sure you can get coil overs for most Audi's, well you probably can but will cost a fair old bit. my mates having this problem with his Audi cabby.
