I'm currently considering building a mid engined kit car but am unsure on which engine I really want...

Someone mentioned that the VW Passat 1.8T has a longitudinal engine with a front wheel drive transverse gearbox....Is this true? Are all 1.8T passats built like that or am I looking at only a surtain model?

Are there any issues with the 1.8T engine? From what I hear it is tunable and quite a good engine?!?

If anyone has any photos of a passat engine and/or gearbox I will give you a virtual pint!

Are there any other similar VAG engines that I could consider?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Passats dont have transfer box's mate, you would'nt be able to use the gearbox as it it is longditunal, on some passat 1.8t's I'm sure they have a different water pump set-up too ie, not run off the cambelt which will use up already limited space if doing a conversion into a polo. You are best off using a golf/a3/tt 1.8t lump to be honest mate.

Thats right the earlier AEB engines have external water pumps.

The longitudinal engines have a matching longitudinal gearbox with output on each side (could work mid engine given enough room, would push the engine into the middle of the car which would be good for weight distribution).

Oops, read it wrong! Sorry! I meant to say that they dont have transverse box's in them!

I said 'if' he was going to fit into a polo mate.

Passat / Audi A4/6 transaxle is a very useful gearbox for a mid engined kit car.

If you want a 1.8T then any passat or fwd A4 or A6 1.8T will be fine for what you want. The box will be cable change and hydraulic clutch which is a good combo for mid mounting. If you have an engine already, then any modern-ish 4 pot front wheel drive passat or audi will do.

The 1980s passat and audi 80 also yield a box of the same layout, which although cheap, is rod change and cable clutch, so harder to integrate.

Hmm bad humour....was reading through thinking both dads audi and my passat 1.8T are longitudinal from memory, lazy revving old men the both of them haha.

Any idea as to a shell?

Old Saab 900 has similar layout longitudinal engine + FWD (gearbox in front of engine, cambelt etc at the back). 900 turbo engine is 2.0 180 Bhp IIRC. Might be worth considering.
