i think it looks like its missing a bolt out of the bell housing into the block? unless the block is different and there is no hole.

Looks like a G40 block to me. I think the only difference in the mk2 G40 engine is the managemant and other ancillaries, hence they all are PY engine code. All the later mk2 and mk3 blocks are cast the same and just modified slightly to each code. The later mk3 blocks were slightly different in that they got push fit waterpipe connections. That engine will still have the knock sensor stump cast on the block even if its not drilled and tapped.

That engine number looks like PY005764 to me. What does it say on the log book?

Just checked ETKA and its definately not a mk2 G40 block. The engine code on that block shows it was made in April 1991.

Why do you think its dodgy? Worst case it has a melted piston, best case the knock sensor is not plugged on or plugged into something else!

Knock sensor mount is on the back of cylinder number 2. Either jack the car right up and take a photo from underneath or take off the inlet manifold to get a photo.

You have no knock sensor bolted to that mount stump. Check for a thick black wire with a ring on one end, dangling about.

thats not the knock sensor hole is it?? i thought it was lower down than that?? that looks to me like its just next to the isv? I'm confused with the orientation some more opinions needed.

The ex cup car block I had was PY004792 so it's most certainly a Mk.3 block.

Look for the charger return feed and see if it goes to a boss in the block(and not pikeyed into the sump) and if the charger/engine mount has 4 bolts holding it to the block.

G40 Block, buy a knock sensor, plug it in, and you're home and dry. :-D

And yes, the knock sensor plugs into that hole- for the little bit of good it actually does...
