Model: Polo GT 1.3 carb engine (not badged or registered as an S) - Polo coupe

Year/Reg: 1990 - G Reg

but could do with getting a bit more power out of her before i put her into my mk1 golf, any ideas of where to start?

could i put a GT fuel management in place here? or am i best going for weber?

any other ideas for xtra BHP would be great.

So it's got a Pierberg 2E3 which is a fine carb when well maintained, but changing jets is hard.

and the inlet is somewhat constricting.

Skimming and porting the head and fitting bigger valves gives biggest gains. It's costly, but you've not got the engine in the car, so there's no pain removing it or waiting for the work to be done.

Apart from that I think the choices boil down to (in rough order of cost)

Carbs:

• Bogg Brothers inlet and bike carbs.
• GK inlet + twin choke Weber DMTR or DMTL and rejetting.
• VW motorsport or sorg manifold and twin 40s (DCOE)

Injection: (I'm less clear about this.. I like carbs, there's no computer in the way, just 104 cm of cable)

• MPi with PoloACE chip.
• MPi with Golf AFM.
• Bigger throttle bodies with megasquirt?
• Weber Alpha system ??

Exhaust:

4-2-1 manifold.

Cam:

• VW GK 292
• Shrick 280 (SV2)
• Newman?

Give us some idea of your budget in pounds and horsepower.

very interested in going either down the bike carbs or the MPi route. any sources of where to obtain more info?

plus a rough est of cost of the parts?

looking to spend around 200-300 for time being, as with xmas been and gone and a partner who loves to be spoilt i haven't as much as i would like at the moment.

Welcome to the forum mate.

You have a quite rare car in this country - a GT badged mk2 Coupe, an S as we know it.

It is an often asked question this. TBH, if you want far better performance combined with reliability and superb economy then you can't go wrong with a decent GT mpi conversion.

They are 75 bhp to start with (20 bhp/35% increase over your current engine), come with a close ratio gearbox (well actually its not really close ratio, its just got a low ratio diff!) and the majority of people who own them on here report excellent fuel economy. The engines are also very, very strong with the only weakness being the headgasket - a problem shared with all mk3 Polo's. This is very cheap and easy to rectify though.

You can buy a mechanically good GT mk3 Polo for 3-400 quid on here/ebay etc. As long as the mechanical side of things aren't shagged out you'll be fine. Remove the complete running gear, electric fuel pumps and wiring loom etc and sell the rest of the parts off to people who want arch trims, seats, clocks etc.

Its a bolt in conversion, just the wiring to sort out - this is not hard as you simply replace the existing bay loom with the GT one and your away.

Yes, you can fit Webers/bike carbs, fit a different cam and port the head etc, but this is an expensive way to get the power you'd get from a GT.

The GT also responds very well to tuning, 85-90 bhp is quite easily achievable without resorting to an expensive ported head and/or camshaft changes.

brilliant replies there thanks alot, dont know much about polos but am a member of the mk1 golf forums. so got on here to look for an upgrade, very impressed with the responses. think i will go down the mpi route, heard lots of praise over the pierburg carb that comes with this car but would like to get the extra bhp.

will keep my eyes peeled for a GT on the ebay as suggested and on this forum.

so what i own is a MK2 Polo coupe S? in theory. but has a GT badge? howcome any reason behind this?

have been confused on looking up parts to what car to actual search for so any tips on there would be excellent.
