well had my G40 in for an MOT at VW cos it was pretty much the only place that would do it at this crazy time of year. Anyway it failed on excessive corrosion on the two brake pipes at the front attached to the flexi hoses. I thought it was a bit OTT to be fair but can't really argue with the tester.

Anyway stressed over the fact that i'd now have to remove the original green pipes and have shit looking copper ones........ until i found out you can buy the original stuff!!

not cheap for a 5 metre roll i must admit but who cares. OVER THE TOP by far to keep things original but hey!

its about 4.90 a metre but i got it cost price. so it cost me about 18 quid for the 5 metres. not too bad i suppose.

Will the DIY type flaring tools be able to cope with working the harder steel pipes into a flare?

thats utter shit mate. on my previous polo i constantly had to have the pipes replaced almost very MOT. down at the garage today actually talking about it they are forever changing copper pipes on cars. withstand knocks and bumps better oh my god tell me more....

Reading about these DIY Tools on ebay and the likes, it appears the steel is too hard for them and a hydraulic press is best used to flare the steel pipes.

Well you did have that problem last year with tiny elves with tiny hammers in your engine bay...if they come back you'll tank your lucky stars you went for copper.

Take a 10 yr old steel pipe and a 10 yr old copper pipe, the copper is more likely to bend/crush whereas the steel will crack/fracture. if faced with one of the two in my braking system, i'd take the bent pipe any day!

the flaring tool they use works fine. its obviously harder to flare the steel but it works. they often have to re-flare oem steel ones to put new sections in on cars, so it can be done.

well how come all the rest of the system looks brand new? all the way under the car. its only the very ends where its exposed in the wheel arch that after 15 YEARS has become pitted? the proof is in the pudding my friend. whereas the copper pipe will have died after 5 years never mind 10.

dont mind doing pads and discs and stuff but i want these doing mint and would rather pay to have the whole system bled properly and the new pipes bent by people who do it every day.

copper still corrodes panda you spaz. ever seen a copper roof turn green? thats coz copper oxidizes. you can get some stuff called Kunifer which is Cupro-nickel alloy brake pipe which doesn't corrode like copper.

anyway, in this case it doesn't really matter, like dan says they have lasted 15yrs so far

copper does rust though. its like aluminium that rusts too. there are differnet kinds of rust. white rust etc.. ok. this could go on forever. lets just pretend they were replaced every year by the previous owner.

the "copper" ones you're referring to are steel with a copper coating anyways. just protects the steel from corrosion afaik.
