What’s that beep in Mk5! GTI's?

Featured Replies

I’ve had my Polo GTI for a month or so now. It’s pretty much factory spec. At first I was curious about this, but now I’m slightly concerned…

Sometimes (not always) when I start the engine there is a beep noise (quite a soft tone). Just one beep. All the dash warning lights go off as normal. I’ve searched the net and VW forums but cant find a definitive answer, answers range from the external temp through to self destruct.

The reason I’m getting concerned is that the car is no longer starting at the first time of asking, but this maybe something to do with me trying to jump start another car from mine, either way the beeping started before I did the jump starting.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help.

Are you talking about a mk4 16v or a mk5 GTi?

I've never heard about this before, but I wouldn't know about a mk5 GTi as I only have a mk4

Erm... not sure what Mk. It's a GTI, X Reg.

That would be a mk5 then..'specially if it's a GTi as there weren't any mk4 GTi's sold here..

OOoh There is a beep under the hood when you turn it on but not fire it... Not that I know what that is...

They dont sound related in my opinion... The instrument panel is all ok then? No warnings?! Maybe you should video it? I know that sounds silly but you never know...

In terms of not starting now.. are you sure its not just a power issue if you had to jump start it?

Just to clarify, it's a Mk3 GTI. My mistake.

I agree that the two issues are probably not related. The car is under warranty so I can take it back and hopefully get the ignition problem sorted, it'll hopefully be a quick fix as the power from the battery is there it just sometimes fails to fire, a lot like when the immobiliser is on, come to think of it. T700BES: I jump started another car using the Polo, the Polo wasn’t jump started, rather the 'startee'.

As for the beep, here's the vid...

Vid Link

Like I said, the problem is intermittent. In the vid it starts fine first time with no beep, the second time it fails to fire and it starts beeping, it only beeps 3 times cos I keep trying the ignition. As I said originally, when I first noticed it beeps just once, but starts up fine.

No warning lights, they all go out, although the handbrake is lit on the vid.

If it's a GTI and X reg, it's a Mk5 in the UK mate! Mk3F in Germany!

Just off the top of my head! The beeping noise when it dont start is the headlight warning gong which like all car comes on when you take your key out the the ignition but the lights are still on. The ignition switch obviously controls this function. For some reason your car thinks the key is out of the igntion even when it isnt and whilst your trying to start the engine. It could possibly be the igntion switch, the 6n igntion switches gave alot of trouble causing starting problems although never seen the gong thing at the same time , but yours might be a freak incident and both things could be tied into the one problem .

Mk5? Curse you wikipedia!!!

Thanks for the help so far. Could just be a weird anomaly, it still beeps when the headlights are off.

is it not a seat belt warning? I have that as a warning lamp on my dash - not that its ever light up - but yours might work. I no its not the headlight noise as suggested above cos thats a completely different noise.

Just my thoughts anyway

I thought seatbelt first, but tried it with the belt on and off, still beeps.

And your right, the headlight noise is more of a loud whiney noise.

Seat belt ? Are them polo gtis have a seat belt warning ? Mine doesnt

is the gong for the oil pressure warning ?

Don’t know if it’s the oil pressure, but there is no warning light and the car was recently serviced. So it’s unlikely. I’ll ask them to look at it when I get the ignition sorted.

Hello,

I watched the video...

Try getting the car scanned for fault codes... Vag-com or a dealer. I agree; the car is trying it's best to tell you something!

The question is what?

Good luck!

Ooops. Forgot to finish this thread. Took it back to the place where I bought it as it was still under warranty. Turned out to be related to loose wiring in the ignition barrel.
