g40 BRV Mod - Who's Done it?

I am just wondering whether to do the BRV mod to my g40, and wondered if anyone can list the pro's cand cons of having the pipe removed, and having it as standard? I also need the pipe that runs from the TB to the Rocker Cover - so please get in touch if you got one.

the only gain is the noise and that the engine only draws in clean air

the downside, the noise if you dont like it lol and you have to lubricate the charger every 500 ish miles with special spray grease (available from PSD)

Plus you'll have to fork out for a catch tank, unless you make a DIY one. Don't do neither as it will fill your engine bay with shite!

That's what you remove for the BRV mod you know?

It prevents warm oily air re-entering the engine.

Warm air reduces performance.

Oil reduces the octane rating of petrol and again decreases performance.

It's a system designed primarily for environmental/emissions reasons. I'll be removing it.

It sounds awesome as well!

i know mate, but i want to keep the sealed system so my charger get adequate lubrication. As fixing a remote ptfe spray onto the charger, so i can squirt some whilst I'm driving is not going to be possible, whilst doing 7k revs around a race track!

Eh? Why the hell would you need to squirt it in whilst you were driving?

you just squirt it in manually once every so often. It'll also do a better job of lubricating the charger than the manky emulsified oil and water mixture that comes out of the oil breather. You just have to remember to do it every so often and also inpect the charger for signs that it's becoming dry and needs doing.

i see what you are getting at, but i dont think they were meant to be cained at 7k round a track, for one at 7k for prolonged periods you will cook the charger.

just take it off and do it properly with spray grease.

if you have ever seen the shite that you end up with in a catch tank you wouldnt be sayin you want to pump it into your charger as lube.

If you want to take care of your charger the first thing you should buy is a PSD stand alone oil supply kit (or make your own).

You may or may not know that the oil supplied to the bearings in the charger is from the engine. For this reason it is really hot (which cooks the seals). I am sure you are aware oil pressure rises with engine rpm...so at 7krpm the pressure of the oil entering the charger is detrimental to its health. Fluctuating oil pressure can pop oil seals out of their housing I think?

A stand alone system will supply the charger with oil at a constant (lower) pressure. The oil is also cooler and can be of a much thinner viscosity. All this results in a happy charger. I think it would be of great benefit to a track car.

Get rid of the boost return system. Spraying PTFE in every 750-1000 miles will keep the charger well lubricated. Just be sure not to put too much in or you will find your boost pipes get coated in the spray. There are no real downsides to this modification and plenty of plus points. The oily mess that comes from the breather isn't a well controlled substence and it doesn't provide the charger with a constant supply of lubrication either. The PTFE spray clings to the internals keeping it lubricated for a good while.

nice reply. the only thing that puts me off is the oil that can and will eventually come out throttle body into the bay. i am tempted as i do belive that it is a better way of looking after the charger internals.

Stuart had no problems with oil until the seals went on one of his chargers, he then had a lightly misted drivers side suspension turret...quick wipe with a rag and a replacement charger and all was good.

Being able to check what comes out the TB is an easy way of seeing wether or not the oil seals are still intact.

I have to do the BRV mod as I sold the TB rocker cover pipe last year...always planned to do it that way.

i understand why you still want it, I've kept mine. i couldn't tell you why really, its more to do with leaving it as is, the way it was built. yeah its probably better off without it. another thing for me is the fucking noise...... i dont think i could live with it tssss tsss tsss all the time, would drive me mad!!!!!!

exactly, i like to leave things as intended to an extent. If VW decided the supercharger was better off with a re circ pipe, then it was obv for a reasn. I'm sure they didnt spend thousands of pounds on Research and Development, if it didnt need one. The reason is emissions and day to day usability of a mass market who can't be trusted to manually lube the charger...or the emissions/economy flat spots in the ECU map...

Just because VW put something on the car doesn't mean it should remain...same goes for the restriction they put in the air box...or the charcol canister.

Have it both ways. Keep it standard; add a regular dose of lube as well.

Wouldn't the gunk that comes through just wash away the lube making it a waste of time?

Not really; if it was that nasty you'd see a pretty distinct mark across the inside of the cam cover and the cam itself where the gasses flowed across. I've never seen anything of note.

Bear in mind that the guys at PSD are in the job of hunting for any stray horses they can find to get an edge, I don't doubt what they are saying is true, just how relevant it is for mere road going mortals is another thing altogether.

Having said that, their crud catch tank looks to be a good bet. Most condensate in the system usually finds it's way back to the sump;not good.

I've dosed my charger every couple of thousand miles with xtralube spray. PTFE is a bit long in the tooth, there's quite a lot of progress inthe superlube market.

Erm you do realise that there is a tunnel through the cam cover dont you for the BR route.

Also PSD recommend the BR mod for everyone not just track use or whatever as far as I'm aware. Its more for the health of the charger rather than the power gains.
