Jumping out of 5th gear

Featured Replies

Hi,

Wonder if anyone can help? My 5th gear keeps jumping out. It's ok in 5th for about 20mins but then it jumps out and won't go back in 5th. All the other gears work fine.

Has my gearbox gone or is it worn gearchange linkage?

Any help would be great.

Cheers

sounds like the gearbox needs either rebuilt or another fitted

Ok thanks mate. I thought it was the gearbox, I'll get it checked out.

That'll be a nice dent in the wallet!!!!!

Could be the fault with the locking collar for fith gear. might not be to bad if you pull the three bolts off the end cap of the box you could have a nosey inside

5th gear faults are quite common on Polo boxes I believe

You can rebuild the 5th gear in situe apparently... Whether anyone has actually done this, is anyones guess.

Yeah i imagine you can, think you just have to remove the end casing and U WILL BE LOOKING RITE AT IT

you might want to try just topping the gearbox oil level before you do anything drastic.

Any chance someone hear knows the price of rebuilding 5th or a fitting a replacement box?

Wouldn't be tackling it myself this time due to time and space, so if someone's had it done recently at a garage then the price there would be sweet.

Or if a gearbox swap can be done on your driveway at home in a day then throw in the encouragement!

Truth is I'm watching a car on eBay that has this problem described :( My old Rolo was 4spd so know naffing around with these 5th gears!

Cheers all :)

Mr Pinches speaks the truth. A common sign of low level box oil is 5th gear jumping out.
