I've enquired about this once before and it was sort of put down to the Hall sender.

I've never done anything about it yet but i'm going to have to do something now i think.

Been out in it today and just as i was pulling up at home, the wipers came on and the engine cut and would not start again, that was about 4.30 and i've been out to it a few times to see if it would start, as normally if i waited a few minutes it would start again. So every time i tried it, the wipers were still going even though they are turned off and it still wouldn't start.

I've just been back out to it now after searching a few hundred posts about polo's not starting, to look at some of the earth connections and a fiddle with the hall sender. Checked the various earths and they all seem to be ok so i took the connector off the Hall Sender and put it back on again, had a fiddle with a few more wires, tried it again and she fired up with no wipers. So i moved it back to outside my house and left it ticking over and it wasn't long before the wipers came on again and the engine stopped. Same again, whenever i turn the ignition on, the wipers are going.

When i put the engine in the car, the black bit that sticks out of the dizzy for the Hall Sender Wires, was broken so it has just been cable tied to the dizzy for the last 12 months or so and never been a problem.

Do we still think its the Hall Sender that needs replacing then or something else?

If the Hall Sender is at fault, can this do what its doing to make the wipers come on?

Any help much appreiciated, its starting to do my tits in, its getting to the point i can't go out in it for the fear of it stopping once and for all

give all the connectors thay you where playing about with a good clean and wee bit of wd40 mate just to clean them

Sounds like a dodgy electrical connection somewhere (in the engine bay most likely). Check all the loom where there are wires for the wipers. It could be something is shorting out into the wiper circuit... So look in the Haynes manual and find that circuit, trace all the wires round the scuttle tray and behind the dash wouldn't hurt to have a look.

EDIT just re-read you post, I'd definitely replace the hall sender connection.

Anybody know where the earth is for the dashboard loom, on a MK2 mind, not mk3. Also what and where is an "X contact relief relay"

I'd look out for a 2nd hand GT dizzy that is known to work.

I don't get it either bud, and can't tell you where the earth is either. Could be an idea to have a good gander in there with a torch see if theres any obvious problems.

Got a shock today when i rang the dealers and they told me it would be between £150 and £170 for a new Hall Sender

Had another look tonight and i think i've sorted it

When i went to it, sure enough turned the ignition on and the wipers came on and it wouldn't start, so i fiddled wid the wires on the to of the dizzy again and nothing, so decided it must be something else. My old man was with me and he has his own garage and he wasn't convinced that it was the hall sender that was at fault.

So he took the HT lead off the coil and i cranked it over while he held the lead close to and earth and the was no life at all, so that sort of narrowed it down to the coil. When we took the plug with the 3 wires connected to the coil and got a look inside it, the earth wire in the plug had what looked like to have melted the plug and the connecter had opened up so it wasn't making a connection on the pin on the coil. So i closed the connector up a bit, put it back on and hey presto it fired up.

But why had it melted it and why did it make the wipers come on.

Well when i did the conversion, the washer pump wouldn't work, so for some reason i connected the Brown and Blue wire on the washer pump to the earth wire on the coil (nice and handy, or so i thought) but the washer pump worked so thats all that mattered. With it being in a saloon, the rear wiper/washer wasn't an issue as there isn't one.

So whether its something to do with the washer pump being connected to the earth on the coil thats warmed it up or not i don't know.

But i've come to the conclusion thats why the wipers were coming on because that wire goes through relays, the wiper/washer stalk and allsorts.

So hopefully i think its ok now, i've taken it for a blast when we sorted it and it was back as it should be.

Just need to sort a way of getting the washer pump working now! Never tried just putting an earth to it, but i'll give it a go sometime and see what happens.
