Depends what you're after, £1500's a funny amount, too much for a good banger, too cheap for something totally modern.

You'd have to pick carefully, but there's some good ones out there for the money (private sales, not the forecourts). Don't bother with the diesel, yeah, it's cheap to run, and by diesel standards, bloody nice to drive, but when it goes wrong, a 4 figure repair bill is all too common. 1.4 is gutless, 1.6 is alright, 1.8 and 2.0 is what it's about.

Look for service history, tidy interior and no rust, anywhere. In all honesty, the Focus is a bloody reliable car, and the only place you're likely to get rust is on the tailgate, particularly under where the chrome trim is on Ghias. There's millions of them out there, so don't be afraid to miss out on one if it's not what you're after, there will be another in 5 minutes. If the history's good, don't worry about the milage, so long as it's not stupidly high (140k+) the engine in these goes on and on. The saloons and estates are often the cheapest, just because they're not saught after.

Get a mint Mk3 Gt or a nice Mk2 Golf

Late Mk3/Early Mk4 Astra. Nice to drive, solid build, reliable. Nothing to really dislike about them, just a solid reliable car. Beware ex-boy racer ones and ones with stupid milage.

As with the Focus above, I probably wouldn't have a diesel just because of the cost if the fuel pump dies.

Come to think of it, that's probably what I'd buy if I were spending that money and didn't want a big car.

If I were spending that much, I'd certainly want something better than a Polo GT, I wouldn't spend more than £500-600 on one, and it'd have to be good for that.

Mk2 Golf could be an idea, it depends on what you want the car for. That money should buy a nice GTI, but Golf GTI prices are an utter lottery with no real rhyme or reason behind them.

Totally depends on what you want it for... if its to be a car to get from A to B, pure and simple and u dont want to look after it, or if u want something to look after

my mate bought a nissan micra for 200 quid, fair enuf it looked cack and had about as much power as a toothbrush but its lasted him almost 4 years now sailing thru every MOT and surviving his Digital throttle control after months away at Uni.. n all he ever done is put petol and oil in lol
