hi all, for months I've been wanting a 6n polo for a first car, cheapish, cheapish insurance, reliable etc... but I've been trying to get a few qotes and for a 1.4 its been around £1500 .. that i dont think i can pay... and I'm not keen on having no powersteering in a 1 liter :(

so was thinking of corsas... and people always saying how shit they are... but are they actually crap?

saw a corsa B the other day in town lowered quite a bit on some wide multispokes but it looked pretty nice... and a 1.2 corsa has powersteering iirc and also maybe will be a lil cheaper on insurance...

if anyone can help me decide or even any other ideas as to what to get as a first car... cheap cars and cheapish insurance please.. thanks a lot in anticipation

i had a 1.0l polo for my 1st car and loved it, re-sale valuse they are betta build quality, dnt worry bout pawer steerin didnt bother me !!

well as for power steerin you dont need it for my 1st car i went for a old beetle think you better of driving a car without power steering personally but I'm just a nutter that loves heavy steering

Corsa's are good cars.

I'm not keen on Corsa's but I have to say my run around is a Clio and it sometimes suprises me! Cheap and cheerful!

There's nothing wrong with Corsa's really, it's just that they've got a bad name (as have Saxo's and 106's etc) for being barry boy cars. Because they are cheap cars, young people buy them and tend to do cheap chavvish stick on modifications to them which makes them look awful and give the cars a bad reputation.

I think that if you apply the same subtle style of modification to a Corsa that is seen done to the majority of Polo's on here it would look pretty nice and be a cheap and reliable car to own as a first car.

If you would really like to get a Polo as your first car why don't you look at getting a Mk3 GT, they are cheaper to buy in the first place and cheap to maintain whilst being a reliable daily car. OK they don't come with power steering but imho you don't need it on a Mk3 anyway as they are pretty light.

Theres nothing wrong with corsa's, they are usually reliable, nippy, and can look great euro'd. Best going for the SXI versions though.

mine little 1litre doesnt have power steering and i dont find it that bad

Its the people who are into Volkswagens that are. They seem to brainwash people into think all other marques of car are shite and no where nears as good. Where as realistically a lot are better and cheaper, Volkswagens are plagued with scene tax.

Back in the day they were reliable and what not, i mean you do see a lot of old Volkswagens compared to say old Fiats. But nowadays Volkswagen are just playing on there image as a very reliable car company when in fact there not all that.

Thats why I always go back to OLD Volkswagens!

I'm gunna have to think about it for a while. (sally healey) i was thinking that about the subtle modifying style ona corsa cos i have seen a few i like...

my internet is being dum.. anyone know about how muhc i would be paying 3rd party fire and theft ona mk3 gt. i would be 17. pass plus i can do for free so with that, ina medium risk area i think it was.

anyone got any other suggestions on a good first car? something that looks nice when low and subtly modified?

Yep definatley, theres not much between new cars these days.

You probably wont get many insurance quotes for less than a grand for your first year of driving, if you want a 1 litre corsa with powersteering get the GLS model. A mate at colege has one and it looks great, its lowered 50mm all round on coilovers, has 6 spoke black alloys with a fat silver lip and a few other small mods. Have a look on corsasport they have a few euro'd corsa's on there and they really suit it.

Everywhere I go I see Corsa's being driven by spanners. They drive so dangerously...

Corsa...the disposable mobile. Get in, drive it, dispose of it in a crash.

As above, nowt wrong with them (well apart from the pedals never quite feel in the right place, but that could just be me), it's just the tits that drive them. If I were after a cheap small car, I'd probably look at them before a mk4 polo truth be known.

90's Vauxhalls are really well made cars. We've got a Vectra as a family spare car, it's done the best part of 160k and I know I could get in it and drive to the end of the earth. All that it's had wrong with it is the driver's seat and window wore out (milage is genuine then!).

It's true, the newer VW's get the more that seems to go wrong with them

On the subject of a Corsa, it's a very average car in standard form

a car that i have been known to use is a volvo there good cars but dont think that helps for a 1st car

just think wen people ask u what car u have and u say vauxhall.

id just be embarrased.

however wen i crashed my car a year ago i was given a corsa sxi while my polo was bein fixed and it was actually pretty quick.

I had a 1.0l 12v corsa as my first car and i loved it. It had the GSI spoiler and a ser of alloys etc with a decent trim inside.

However, the 1.0 l engine sounds like a tractor and is unbelieveably slow.

(Not driving like an idiot, i mean driving from say a 50 mph zone into a 70 mph zone taking about a week to get to the speed limit).

The timing chain went on mine, blew the engine. New engine cost 200 quid and 170 for a garage to fit.

It was a really low insurance group mind! I should have kept it as the shell was mint and I could have put a 2.0 16v red top in it :(

out of a corsa or polo i'd got for polo, power steering makes little difference to be honest only time its much use is when parking in tight spaces.

also the vw scene is an amazing place which is a bonus.

i had a 1.2 corsa before my polo and i didnt like it much as it felt very toy like but engines tend to be sound,but then again so are old vw engines.

try get a test drive of both cars and decide from there.

yehhh the above post si whats sawying me... the community for vw's is a lot more appealing. kinda more enthusiasts than modders. and i wuddent wanna slip into the chav stereotype just by buying a corsa. so yeh i guess i will try and get a drive in both. budget will probably be about a grand for a car and 1.5 for insurance cos thats what my brother paid for his first actual car and insurance. lol . cheers for the help people

From about 1990 onwards, I really wouldn't agree. As Heartagram said, VW play the reliability card, but they just don't deliver it. Try a 15 year old Polo then a 15 year old corsa and a 15 year old micra and see which has the least wrong with it.

The problem isn't that the car is shit. They are just mundane, boring, euroboxes. OK, the Corsa Bs aren't that bad, but C/D are crap if you enjoy driving.

very good point, but the fact i've got 2 80's golfs and still have to walk to work would suggest they ain't as reliable as some of the die hard vw posse would have you believe
