Lil update on my Dr Pepper mk1

Featured Replies

hey hey!

an update!!

some enginey bits shots for you pre build up!

first up are my modified pistons and rods including a brand new piston as one had a chunk of skirt missing! these are all balanced to race spec and have new bearings and rings.

P1090180.jpg

next is my crank, front pulley, clutch cover plate and super lightened flywheel all balanced to race spec too

P1090189.jpg

a shot of the head not very exciting on the outside just a clean up and some painting on the rocker cover.

P1090181.jpg

but inside there is a fair amount of porting going on to get it flowing much better

P1090182.jpg

here we have the carbs I'm going to be fitting along with the hoses and inlet me and my friend made (needs some final finishing of the smoothing the inside and the stubs cutting to length)

P1090183.jpg

a few of the inlet

P1090185.jpg

P1090186.jpg

heres the fuel pressure reg il be using good ol filter king

P1090191.jpg

my lovely shiney(not for long lol) exhuast manifold and downpipe

P1090187.jpg

and finally the 5 spd box all cleaned up and ready to go in

P1090190.jpg

all in all it doesnt look very exciting here but once its in and running it should be a lil ripper.

I've done some work on the block too but il keep that secret plus gotto get a few more bits like oil cooler etc.

whatcha think?

If you could start making some of those inlet manifolds and sell them on I'm sure you could make a fair few quid on them.

Very cool setup anyways

yea cant be bother tbh lol!

pretty pleased with the outcome tho seeing as its cost me £10 so far lol

WHat lump are you actually using then? Forgive my ignorance! Not the standard 895cc job?

  • Author

nah coupe s hk 1300 is the weapon of choice,

went for the earlier lump to use the mechanical head, going for revs you see! hoping for 8500-9000 rpm mwahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Sweet mate. Will you need to run megasquirt or anything like that? And did you diy the head, or was it done professionally?

nah old skool carbs and mechanical ignition for now, will upgrade later for sure if i can go coil per cylinder coilpacks it would be cool 8-) might not be able to run mega revs till later i guess.

my friend who helped on the manifold did the head, he has years of experience in doing headwork and has done them before for my other cars and i was very pleased with the results!!

Hmm... he does a good job then? If i posted him my head, do you think he'd do it? If so, any idea how much?

Nice work with this mate.

valve bounce on standard valve springs will occur at around 7k

cool stuff, whats modified about the pistons? just the valve cut outs to run a crazy cam?

Be interesting to see if all come together, I love these budget conversion jobs.

Race spec! :D

swanky stuff!

looks like a nice £10 worth there lol, fair play

lol yea when i say race spec its the higher tolerance balancing that the engine machine shoop does! lol

well the cut outs in the pistons are like that stock but i had some decked off the block and topped off the tops of the pistons to raise the compression

we shall see if it all works soon hehe

if it doesnt then ho hum most expensive bit so far is the engine machining and balancing :unibrow:

As I said in my pm awesome work there bud.

Pretty much confirmed my carbs plan I have which includes doing some headwork, altho I don't think I can be bothered with doing anything to the block cos I'm lazy :) Just out of interest how much was the balancing?

I seem to remember seeing uprated double valve springs on ebay.de a few years back you can probably still get them somewhere.

  • Author

ah the springs are easily available from anyone selling decent cams

ah the balancing work hmmmmm including the lightened flywheel and new piston came to 400 quid!!! ouch!!!

better be worth it lol!

J

Good work J.

It'd be well worth doing a dummy build of the engine and use plasticine to check for valve to piston clearance.

No point in it going clonk the first time you turn it over.

Cheers,

Richard.

ah you have just anticipated my next port of call, was always going to do a dry build just to check it all

cheers anyways tho dude!!

Good thread  . Do you know how much 'meat' was taken off those rods for them to be balanced up? Be good to know if the early ones are better. From experience the MK3 rods have very poor QC and i've seen a set loose in excess of 6g.

Such a great read keep the good work

they had to take loads off nick!

i think in total they reduced they the rotating force at 10,000rpm from 614.86 lbs to 43.56 lbs!!!!!! would notice a huge difference if i had run the engine stock then had the mods done!

J

Yeah the big ends need to be spot on balanced at that sort of RPM. No rattles for you then on tickover :)

Have you got hold of some uprated rod bolts as well then?

  • Author

nah was reliably informed the stock ones should be good enough for now perhaps il uprate them later on if i go all out on with 16v head etc, but for now I'm trying to keep it relatively low budget.

i also had some fabric left over from my retrim so thought id have a go at trimming my parcel shelf

i think its things like this that really make a nice car into a real special show mobile lol!

enjoy!!
