declaring mods...

Featured Replies

basically i know some people dont and some people do, how much are you paying extra for your mods? I'm buying ym alloys and coils tomo want to know rough estimates for how much I'm looking at paying extra on my insurance.

Also i read on bell insurance that if i dont declare my mods, the insurance will only pay out for my standard polo?

If you don't declare, they could choose to invalidate your policy and royally screw you over if you're in a crash.

Phone them to ask an "in principle" question, and record the call.

  • 2 weeks later...

If you don't tell them about mods your insurance is void. Basicaly you have 'no' insurance if you crash.

To put a figure in your mind, I was 19 with 0ncb in a poor postcode area when I added aftermarket alloy wheels, interior changes (just a GT interior but it still counts), exterior decorative changes (debadged grill, clear indicators & side reps, front fog lights (OEM again but still counts I believe)) and it came to about £45 for about 9 months remaining on the policy, based on a policy worth £1050 for the year. So really it's not a lot of money and nothing compared to a void insurance policy when you need it most.

As Yeti said just phone them up and ask for a quote for what you want to do. If you like it ask them to apply it to your policy and you're sorted!

Also worth mentioning that (with my insurance company (elephant.co.uk) at least) they won't cover the actual modifications against theft or damage, so they will be replaced with standard items.

Oh and electric windows, central locking and (NOT musical) air horns didn't cost anything :)

Coilovers and aftermarket wheels bumped it up about £150, then the fact i have to drive with hand controls it bumped it up another £200 :cry:

I'm 23, been driving neary 6 years, 0 no claims bonus and I'm paying just short of £800 for a 1.4 8 valve :oops::cry:

Its was only £2400 for my old 20vT polo with wheels, coilovers, and external mods, in 05/06

hey,

why do you have to drive with hand controls?

Mine is 800 quid with alloys, exhaust, tinted windows and induction kit declared on a 6n2 1.4 16v, I think the mods pushed mine up by about 150 quid. Also got my lass on as a named driver, she is 19 with 0ncb. And of course my mam lol By adding her on my quote dropped from £1000 to £800 :)

I'm 20 with 3yrs ncb.

i didnt declare my mods on my insurance.

i know it probably wouldnt stand for much if i was to claim, but il just say something like "i didnt know it was modded. i bought it like that, look, theres a vw badge on the wheels, how did i know they were after market etc..."

everyone has different theories on this issue....iv seen it covered a few times on here.

well my stupid insurer says that you cant have mods either. bit stuck on what I'm going to do now. may have to wait a year then change insurer :(

guess it depends on the situation at the end of the day, but I'd be careful - from another thread:

my friend bought a mk4 fiesta which came with standard ford alloys (which at the time we thought were on there from factory) he had a wack in it and the insurance man came around and ion his sheet of paper it sat it had steel wheels so he had to pay £400 extra for some thing. and i can honesly say neither of us knew any diffrent!

Even if you have factory fitted alloys they need to be decalred. Excuses don't work with insurance companies.

Also, it might be an idea to watch what you put on the forums, something blatent like "I dont declare mods on my insurance" might end up getting you in trouble either that or someone will moan about it for some reason

always best to pay that little bit extra rather than putting up with what will happen if you haven't declared :)

DECLARE EVERYTHING!!! trust me!! i had a right battle over mine on the polo, and everything bar the wheels they were aware of! well they knew it had alloys, but when they found out that they were after market, and not the BBS solitudes which mine apparently came with from new, they went mad and almost did me over!! lucky as i had declared everythin, i paid the £25 which it would have cost to declare the wheels and they let me off!!

however, declaring doesnt mean they'll pay for them if stolen or written off!!!! it just means they wont void your insurance!!

i learnt the hard way!!

Yeah then you're in pretty dark water i guess, best to avoid companies who don't allow mods i suppose.

use cis for wheels lowering an exhaust etc there fine and minimal cost , more majourly modded cars brentachre are cheapish and alost any mods you want ! give em a bell

adrian flux - £808 TPFT. licence for 6 months, 0ncb. declared all mods i intend to do over the next few months.... still £808 TPFT cos they just don't care.

and you get a CP discount ;)

ermm you sure. cis told me no mods

I'm with direct line and just read this

From the insurer’s point of view, a modified car can be a bigger risk than an untouched model. The premium is therefore likely to be higher than for an unaltered car. It’s also worth clarifying at the outset that Direct Line will not insure a car owned by someone under 25 if it has been modified. And if a modification obscures the license plate, for example, it may prove illegal.

That sucks for me then :-(

CIS will insure mods - I've had a quote off them for a G40 converted Mk2 Golf.
