Was just wondering what sort of power both the 2.0 8v and 16v Golfs put out?

Not sure about the 8v but they're too slow anyway

16v your looking at about 150bhp standard but have seen people with a remap and an exaust get 170-180 just depends like everythig really

2.0 8V = 115bhp

2.0 16V = 150bhp

Google is your friend took me 2 minutes to find that out!

the 8v is about 115-120 bhp and the 16v is about 145-150 bhp ( i think)

if i recall correctly the 16V was detuned from 170bhp so that it didnt have the same power output as the VR6.

VR6 174bhp as standard in the Mk3. Stifled by emissions laws though, don't forget VW had to make them to be sold in the USA, where emissions are quite restrictive, and like all cars they have to make a balance between economy, reliability and driveability.

Might also be worth you concentrating on the torque figures of the engines rather than power. Power is nothing with torque.

they did two different versions of the VR6 ODB1 putting out 172 bhp and ODB2 putting out 184 bhp change over was around 95

And the 2.9 putting out 187bhp iirc. These are all ODB1 spec though.

From a power perspective the problems with these engines are their low compression ratio. However this does mean they last forever (they dont run in till 100k) and they can be supercharged with a stage 1 kit without changing the internals or touching the CR.

Power isn't everything.

I've beaten many a Mk3 Golf GTi in my old saxo and my old 2.0 Focus. Saxo was running about 100bhp at most and my focus was only 130 something. The Mk3 GTI has never been a land speed record breaker.

I think the one I raced in the Focus off the lights was a 16v, according to the owner it was putting out 150bhp anyway so that does make it a 16v.

As for the others though I didn't see them long enough to notice haha.

Although a slightly tuned one did give my Focus a good run, we were both level pegging going past the 100 mark and I only just beat him to 130...........Was done on private land of course

The 2.0 16v ABF engine is a beaut. They often put out more power than VW figures suggest and are easily tuneable. Its the mk3's weight problem that lets it down.

Well the one I raced off the lights which was supposidly a 16v was a heap of shite. Wasn't a very tidy Mk3 at all, so probably not producing all that it could. Would explain why I bet it so easily off the lights.

Got a whole car with an ABF in it for £100 so would be rude not to. Specially since his C plate mk2 is MINT!

i had an 8v and with exhaust and induction kit fitted it felt alright although to do it again i'd go 16v the weight of the car is a real issue in the process of helping my sister's boyfriend get a deal on a mk3 with G60 conversion that could have been one to produce but still pretty slow! engine was putting out 180brake but the car weighs a ton!
