well I got round to finishing off the gearknob I started making before christmas:

Heres the result: (pics are off phone so don't really do it justice!!)

this was the 1st time I had used a lathe in about 8 years, so I was reasonably pleased! might have a go at making some mirror adjusters now and maybe have a go at making a different shape gearknob for my other polo.

thats a good effort. I made a gearknob and handbrake handle for a mates mx-5 about a year ago.... u get a sense of achievement out of it rather than just buying one

used a mini milling machine! table top jobbie. yeah its nicer when you get your hands dirty

That's really good, i love the detail on the top. Looking into getting a lathe myself as i used them a lot when studying engineering at college.

i know what you mean! the one i used wasnt exacly a pro lathe and is laughably small, which is a shame coz I've got some teardrop alloys that i would love to have a go at re-facing!

what would people be willing to pay? they would all be a similar design to the one above and be mirror polished. i cantr see there being much of a market myself as there are loads to choose from on ebay etc! appreciate the kind comments though!

Jon, what thread is the gear stick?

now that is a good q, the answer is i dont know at the min. i cut an old gearknob in half to try and work out the thread, but it appears to taper! how ever ally is softer than steel, so i had drilled a hole thats a tiny amount smaller than the fattest part of the taper and used a 1/4" tap which had a similar pitch thread and it has gone on fine, and has even tightened up ok. my original plan was to cut the old thread off and re-tap it to suite the gearknob.
