New Engine/Bike Carb Conversion

Featured Replies

Heres a few pics of my on going engine swap from a 1.4 8v (AEX) to the 1.6 8v (AEE) with fast road cam, ported, polished and skimmed head, 4 Branch manifold (when i buy it!!!) Custom inlet manifold (by me) and yamaha R6 carbs.

Think I'm pretty much doing the same as Dr Pepper, but a 1.6 and in a 6n.

Looking good so far. What are your plans come MOT time?

There was another 1.6 Polo on bike carbs on here a little while ago, but I think the owner left after getting abuse

Oh! wouldve been good to see what hed been upto, My plans are to find a "friendly" tester to bribe!!

/\/\/\/\ haha it was more like him handing out the abuse first!

Looks good mate.

I want to run ITB's on mine, know a couple of people who have theirs on bike carbs or itb's and you cannot beat the sound of them!

Thats one reason i wanted carbs, but webers are reasonably expensive, so bike carbs are the way forward!

He had a Mk2 with the 1.6 from a Skoda and bike carbs on that. Standard cam and exhaust. He reckoned he was level pegging with an RS4 and thinks it went from 30-90 quicker than an M3. Hence why people abused him.

Can't beat individual throttles on a forced induction engine. More drivability, and you actually get proper induction roar!

I'm no wiz with engine but hahaha

and i liek the smoothed rocker mate if the rest of the bay is sooooper smooth it will look the bollocks good luck :-)

Make me one of those inlet manifolds

Oh dear what an idiot, i spoke to a company who do these allday long and they said theyed seen a maximum of 30bhp increase but that was with alot of other work, So dunno what mine will be in the end, Its only 75bhp to start with!!

if only they would give me 30brake increase, bargain is what id say! haha

as if i need another 30brake but i want the noise!

may have to speak to my mate who did his on his rallye. get him to make me a manifold. he used 600 throttle bodies i believe. Will have to look into it i think.

Mine wont pass mot on emissions easily anyway, I'm sure someone i know will sort me out.

thats nice! i may be doing something similar!

i had Bogg Bors make me a manifold to fit a set of r1 throttle bodies to my C20XE in my mini:

a fantastic bit of kit, and a really nice guys too!

although if i go for bike carbs on the polo, i'll probs have a bash at making my own manifold to keep costs down.

Who ever can start mass producing bike carb inlet manifolds will become the richest clubpolo user the world has ever seen...

Maybe

**EDIT**

What i should have said, 'Who ever can start mass producing bike carb inlet manifolds cheaply'

There who i have spoken to, yeah theye quoted me £170 to make me a manifold from scratch, thats why i thought id have a crack at it, wasnt be that hard!

True, If i wasnt so lazy it would be a possibility!!

yeah. i paid around £230 for that manifold. But its far better than anything i could've made!

The beauty with the small block vw engines is that the port spacing is very similar to that of the bikes, so you needn't worry about spacing the carbs apart or, like my manifold, keeping them stock spacing but adapting the inlet to match. Pretty much a straigh inlet as you've made.

right sod it, i want ITB's!haha

am i right in saying it is easier to do than the carbs? as you fuel injection. just need throttle linkage setup, manifold, bodies and then rollling road set up.

i know it is more complicated than that but its the basics.

If anyone has any input on ITB'ing then let me know!

Have already PM'd Yoof about his set up.

Cheers

Chris

Thats exactly it, the only thing i have struggled eith was getting it welded cheaply, but hopefuly thats getting done for a favour

The only problem I can see is what ITBs to go for. I'm not certain if they are all suitable for boosting through.

I reckon youl need new engine management for that, and thats not cheap

yeah know what you mean, i cant think of anyone who has or had ITb's with a charged car on here.

My mate has cbr 600's (i think) on his rallye 16v, they are awesome but obv N/A motor.

big4244

have been looking into emerald, Yoof ran his gt on ITB's with a poloace chip i belive, but it may change for my situation as I'm forced induction.

Will have to do some asking round i think! there are so many things that i want to do right now, but as I'm getting engine work being done atm i may as well do it at the same time.

Edited by sooped_up_g

it depends on your current setup. i take it you are forced induction already? TB's would be the way to go, but you'd most likely need to run some custom engine management (i'm using MegaSquirt). Are you SPI or MPI at the mo? (sorry, i know v little about polo engines!) If you're forced induction then you'll need a plenum fabricated. You could just make a simple box to stick on the TB's but ideally it should be of a calculated volume and shape for you're air flow rate etc.

Throttle linkage is pretty straight forward. it is just the same a push bike brake cable end. i'm just using a cut down brake cable for mine!

EDIT: with regards to the new mangagment and cost... its varies pending what you go for, but just for reference, you can get a MegaSquirt setup for around £200. thats a diy kit, so you'd need to know how yo use a soldering iron.

Edited by Joel

Have played around with megasquirt before, is a good system its just finding the right setup etc. I've nothing against soldering, its just finding the best way of doing it.

I'm MPI: I'm running a cup car engine with ported head, inlet, eaton specific cam, 310 injectors, full through 4-2-1 manifold and de cat system, custom eaton set up, tiny pulley etc.

flowing when mapped properly around 22psi of boost. so calculations will need to be done for the right airflow etc.

I don't know of many ITBd charged cars full stop, which is a shame, because the noise is immense!

As Joel has said, a lot of thought will have to go into the plenum, because you really, really, don't want to go overboosting one or two cylinders!

you know more than you let across Joel :p

I think i may be stealing the bike brake pedal aswell :D

Oh, and all this talk of bike carbs/TB's is making me want you to make me a manifold even more!
