New Engine/Bike Carb Conversion

Featured Replies

Pulsar GTi-Rs have throttle bodies as standard an a turbo'd motor, makes for an interesting noise, although it's muffled and not really heard over the turbo (not on the one local to me anyway). I'd say if you where considering it as a route chris, get bodies from one of these, as they hold lots of boost, most bikes ones do too, although a few aren't 100% sealed units.

I used kawasaki ninja throttle bodies on my old gt- with a DIY Aluminium Inlet, connected with silicone joiners, obviously you'd need something more hardcore than this to withstand boost on a regular basis.

The plenum will be tricky for the polo, and if you get it very wrong, you end up with uneven boost division, something that can be ahrd to detect (especially when it's a small amount) unless you're running individual EGT senders (I only have a single one- I guess 99% of people have none) either way, not something you can really mock up at home (unless you've got some good CAD software, and a flowbench in your garage?)

Megasquirt is a good system (for the price) but it's by no means an automotive grade product, I had mine running for a few thousand miles and had no problems at all, although I'm suspect of its ability to start the car in freezing conditions as some of the components where not rated low enough- the case isn't sealed either, meaning you have to put it in the cabin. Also worthwhile mentioning with megasquirt factor in the price of a wideband system too- key tool for tuning, and something which every high power G40 owner should invest in just to keep an eye on their investment (the engine!)

Yoof ran his gt on ITB's with a poloace chip i belive

I used MS1 for mine :-)

Chris- In your situation I'd not worry too much about throttle bodies etc yet- I'd factor in another £1500 or so to do things properly (bodies, inlet, new throttle body, cables, new management system etc... the list goes on) and for the gains you'd get it wouldn't really be worth it (in my opinion) I'd rather spend £1500 refining the chassis/brakes and getting some track time in- but all personal opinions.

Sorry for invading your thread- your work looks good so far :-D Nice to see more and more people pushing the small block motors further, hope 2008 brings some new power targets for everyone!

Yep put me down on the list for a manifold. Thanks.

Nice work there anyway will be a quick engine when done.

Cheers for your response Pete,

A lot of useful info in there to think about. I know in my situation there is a lot more to do than there is with a N/A engine.

I've done a fair bit to my chassis etc already, koni yellows all round, g60 brake set up (prob change to wilwoods when you get your kit sorted) have a subframe and so on.

The engine is where all my money has gone in to, have a wideband lambda setup too.

I was hoping to avoid standalone ecu (i had the option to emerald in last year and stupidly i took the car back as i needed it-regretting it now majorly!) but i can totally understant that youwill need the ability to measure everything more when you have individual control elements to every cylinder.

I have a small amount of experience with MS1 when we charged my friends capri, we never got round to fully tuning it though as we moved on projects but i would prefer to emerald or similar as the future gains are much better.

I was hoping it would not cost as much as it looks like it will to do it (i did always wonder when you see throttle body kits advertised for the far side of 1500 why they were so much. Now i know why!)

It has definately opened my eyes to what options are available and i will enquire to some companies to whether they would look in to the manifold and bodies.

The management is the biggest cost i can think of. Will need to sit down and think whether i spend money on the bodywork or have a more mental engine. Its going to be stupidly quick as it is, its whether i go all out and different or not. (not that an eatoned g isnt different! dont get me wrong)

Hmm lots to think about.

Oh yeah and my plan was to take it for some track testing once the engine and chassis mods were complete. This obviously depends on what i do. More than likely for the moment will stay as i am at the moment with digifant, remap and fit the relevent suspension and engine bits i have sitting in numerous boxes and get it running A1. Then see what i can do abou ITB's and in the future spend decent time with R & D and then go emerald based. I dont want to go rinsing my credit card or savings straight away! Am good at doing that already!

Cheers for any help!

Chris

Sorry again for the Hi Jack, i think that your set up is awesome and you can clearly see by peoples responses that they wish it was them posting it was theirs! haha

Will be good to see it all set up and going! Keep us informed!

Was that for me? if it was there 1999 yamaha R6, i think anything later than these are throttle bodies, with injectors, not carbs

yeah it was to you, sorry. thats the very earliest R6s then if memory serves me well. They ran carbs up to 2001, after that they went to injection. Its odd how the R1 stayed with carbs for another couple years :?

thanks!

Yeah i know, it depends on what engine your running realy, i chose r6 because there size 36mm (i think), nearly match's the size of the ports on my head, i think any enine bigger than 1.6 would probably be more suited to R1 carbs?, Hope its been of some help to you.

yeah thats great thanks.

it all depends on what engine i choose for the polo i spose

I'm using R1 Thottle Bodies on my 2 litre mini.

hi there, just wanted to bump this back up, and ask how its going?

I've almost finished my conversion from 1.3 to AEE power on R6 carbs (i'll post my conversion pics when its all done)... all i need it to do is get the carbs mounted. I've not done as much as you, for now i've got a stock head and cam, only performance mods are the carbs, 4 branch and 2" stainless system.

Couple question tho... what are you doing with the cv thingymabobs (technical term) in the carbs? I initially thought that i could use the breather outlet on the rocker cover and split it off to the two inlets either side of the carbs... until i realised there was no breather on the AEEs rocker cover! lol. If anyone at all can shed some light, that'd be ideal!!

Also have you got you are exhaust manifold yet? I went with an ashley which was on the 1.3 that was in my car before.

cheers!

Do you mean the 2 vent pipes on the of the carbs? i think you are, i spoke to bogg brothers and they say leave them as they are (open to atmosphere), I haven't looked at ashley performance< how much was it if you dont mind me asking?

pretty sure joel's talking about the slider things inside the carbs, which move up when the pipes on the side are blown into, so when engine speed increases so would the choke size... - by leaving them to the atmosphere they'd stay closed the whole time?!

thats correct open to atmosphere bogg brothers are sound and mine are running fine

i meant the slider thingys inside the carbs, which open when air is blown into the two vent pipes either side. (i didn't know a technical name). But yeah, i was chatting to guy who knows his stuff about bikes today, and he said the same thing. as the air is drawn in, they open up. so leave them open. one less thing to worry about!

.

wow, lookin nice.

where did you send it? and was it just a p+p that was done?

That polish job is immaculate, my hat is off to the professionals who have the skills to do that. I've just bunged my cyl. head into a cov engine shop and my personal own polish job can't touch that for neatness.

I had it ported, polished and skimmed, a bloke i work with does them, only cost me £150, i have also arranged for newman cams to grind me a camshaft matched to the mods i have done, for £170 all inc

Test run with the carbs on the maniold, can just about get them on!

Nice, I love the look of R6 Carbs.

You should get some nice backfire (Afterfire) with those carbs and a straight through System, I do on my bike anyway!!!

At 18 (or 17) i can ride an R6 and the insurance is only £700 165mph+

Or i can drive my 1.05l Genesis and insurance is £1400!!! 110mph (downhill with tailwind)

I think (to my memory) they brought in the injection in 2003 on the R6.

Thinkin back to forced induction, the R6 has 'Ram-air' which is a sort of weak-forced induction system that just has an intake at the front of the bike that forces air into the airbox. +1psi at 165mph maybe

Insurance is stupid!!, yeah only the earlyier 6's were pure carburetors, the later ones were throttle bodies with injection, i did here that about them, but these are guna point at my bulkhead so i doubt il be getting that effect!!

Spot my STUPID mistake!...DSC01019.jpg

If you didnt see it, theres no where for the spark plugs to go!!

Lol , i made the same mistake....
