a rear fog light is an essential light on a car as part of the MOT

Yep the fog light is part of the MOT unlike the reverse light.

only if factory fitted

^^^ If you dont have a rear fog light you have to fit one for the MOT, nothing to do with being factory fitted or anything like that, you've just got to have one

never had to fit one on my old car.

no reverse light and no fog light.

if one is fitted after-market or factory fitted it has to work though.

like your spare tyre,if it's there they will check and fail you on it if knackered,it if not it does not matter cos it isn't a legal requirement

EDIT:

have just checked on vosa web site.

we are both right !!! to a degree.

it states "fog light/s must be fitted to all vehicles FIRST used on or after 1st april 1980"

depends i know what you mean on my bike, ( i know different )

but my back brake leaver had no attachment to work the brake light but at 1st they failed it for it, but once i spoke an said that it came like that. nothing is actually broken an is no way of getting it to work (well you cna put a switch in-line with the fluid but took like 2 hours to bleed my brake so not doing it again) they passed it as it was :D

Sorry my fault I just assumed we were talking about cars that were about 20 years old or younger !

fair point.

what i was trying to put across is that an mot has variants depending on the age of the car.

should have been a bit clearer on my last posts

Daft question but, you have got the headlights on dipped beams when you're checking it right?

I've caught myself out like that before :ninja:
