Am I the ONLY one

They rub like hell, front and back. Apart from raising it a little whats the bast way to get rid. Spacers? Id be willing to rip the inner arches out aswell if that would help.

I see people on here talking about 16" wheels and I'm thinking - WHAT?

And how the hell do chavs manage to get stupid size wheels on their cars?

What size tyres are u running? I had 195/45/15 on my Mk3 and they didnt scrub at all!

  • Author

I'm not acualy sure of the size, dont think its any bigger than 195. But it does have 65 aspect side walls.

Its a MK4 if that helps.

you see to be able to help we really need to kno the tyre sixze and wheel dimensions like offset and width

from what youve said so far I'm pretty sure its your tyre size being too big thats a prob especially if you car is lowered!

get some 195/45/15's on there and you should get on alot better!!!

hth

J

Yeh its the 65 thats doing it! 195/45 or even 50 will stop the scrubbing!

How do I measure offset? Il go and measure the wheels I've got to go on it. Next time I'm at my car il measure up.

Yeah it's the 65.

I'm running 185/60 on 14's and they only just fit with full lock on. I'm dropping to 185/55 when I can

Thanks for the link, good bit of info there.

The wheels that are going on my car are. 6Jx15 ET36. And to show I've been studying that means - 6 inches wide, with a J bead contour, 15 iches tall, with a positive offset of 36mm 8-)

With 195/50/15s on them will I have a problem?

Still not ideal for a Polo, 195/45 is better and will keep your gearing accurate. At the moment it will be MILES out.

That doesnt worry my the slightest. Gearing went out of the window a long time ago with the C/R box. Just the rubbing its self I'm trying to stop.

Il get some better tyres and rise it a little then see wheat happens. Oh I forgot to mension that most of the rubbing now is acualy from a bent wishbone, however it would still rub without that.

Hmm what box you running then?

a c/r box! wtf is that thing runnin! bet it whines like a whore

is it a rally spec polo?

can you shed any details about it?

i think you might have small trouble with 195/50s

would go for 45s personally

mike

195/45s definite, was this at volksfest wales last year?

Yes its a Group N1 rally car (N1 means production based car up to 1400cc). Ex Polo challenge car, and apparently one of the championship winning cars (but I cant find any info on that to back it up) driven by Tony Simpson. They where all LHD built by VW. I've had it a few months now. I haven't used it in anger yet as I'm still paying it off, not long to go tho. I posted a video of it in the 'Polo S2000' thread. Il post it again if you cant find it.

It has...

Engine & Trans.

Cams, K&N filter element, full competition exhaust system, VW motorsport ECU, gemini straight cut close ratio gear box with limited slip diff.

Running Gear.

Fully adjustable proflex suspension, mintex brake pads with discs on the rear (I'm not sure if discs on the rear come stardard on 16v polos?), braided flexies, brake bias valve, hydralic hand brake, competition forest tyres.

Safety.

International weld-in roll cage (welded through to front top strut mounts), OMP bucket seats, 4 point harnesses (witch run out this year so il be getting 6 points soon), Hand held extinguisher & fixed extinguisher thats plumbed through to the engine bay activated from in and out of car, Engine kill switch in and outside, brake and fuel lines run inside car.

Random.

OMP steering wheel, horn switch in co-drivers footwell, 11mm sump guard, fuel tank guard, stripped out (to comply with group N, have to leave front and rear door cards and dash in), 100W bulbs and its got the wiring and attachments for a bonnet pod, but I haven't got one yet cause their bloody expensive.

What about 185/50? Any sidewalls smaller than that are rare on rally tyres, for 15" wheels anyway...

GroupB, yea I was at the Volksfest last year. Droped the polo back off after the show and lost the one and only key I had for it. And the worst thing about it I had to leave to go to Nottingham in 20 minutes so I had hardly any time to look for it. I got a key in work made up for it now tho so its ok 8-)

185/50 is fine also, 14s come with 185/55s. Glad your key problem is sorted now.

I thought it was there, I was having a nosey almost all day.

Cams, K&N filter element, full competition exhaust system, VW motorsport ECU, gemini straight cut close ratio gear box with limited slip diff.

Decent spec, may have to look for some of these for mine.

Aparently all the Polo Challenge parts have been sold to a guy in Holland. Hes added 20% to the prices and is selling them. Il have to try and find out the website.

I dont mead to be a gobby arsehole of condacending. . .BUT, if you have built a are racing a rally car (thinking you will know about engine/gearbox/general mechanics, choosing tyres that dont scrub would be a fucking walk in the park?

Again not taking the piss but it is aneasier subject to learn than close ration gears, locking diffs, general stuff about engines?

nice car though

He bought it as a group N car I think...

As I say, they where all built by VW. I bought the car as it is and knew absolutly F/A about it when I had it. This is just one of the many things I need to find out, I posted it here cause its apropriate to 'Wheels, Tyres, Suspension and Brakes'.

Other things I have questions about are, Servicing the lifeline fire system, adjusting the handbrake, setting up the stiffness of the dampers. Most of these subjects I dont think are really suited to this forum (maybe I'm wrong) hence me only mensioning the wheels.

Thanks.

Hi Mate.. pretty new to clup polo... i had the same prob with my mk4,,, i got 195 tyres on 15's.. best thing to do is firstly knock the inner wing folds in and get a set of coillovers,, as spring kits are kind of soft compared to stiff coillovers.

No it's not, just get the right sized tyres. I can understand this rally boy needing the bigger tyres, but for a road car, if you have 195/45-15s on a Mk4 Polo with a decent offset, they will not rub...

He bought it as a group N car I think...

Cool as... sorry if i came across a bit arsy!, can i have a go
