coilover + crash = insurance probs

Featured Replies

Helloooo

Was wondering how much of a check to insurance people do on cars after a crash?

reason is I'm considering getting some coillies but keeping my standard 16v alloys, if i was in this situation and 'hypotheticly' had an accident (without declaring the coillies) could i just take nip round to the yard where the car is bein held and quickly adjust the ride height as much as possible upto pretty much standard height?

A if mr insurance man comesa knocking i could just say 'eh wtf it aint lowered?! coilovers?! wt do they do? not done anything since i got it and its the same height as everyone else i know who has a polo?'

Cant just go and change insurers as no1 else fancies the idea of insuring me at 18 with the valver :-( n 0 NCB as I'm in my mums name paying 1200 fc

I've never experienced it myself *touch wood* but I'm fairly certian they're trained mechanics, much like the Vosa people!

Best to declare, but i never did when i put springs and shocks on mine. They come and inspected the car and he didnt say anything. Just fucks up if they do find out, insurance companies will do anything to get out of paying out!

the best way if your going to crash, dont damage anyone, anyones property or anything else but your own car. that way you can get it toes away and fix it yourself :) have you tried CIS when i was 17 on my mums on my valver it was 600 for the first two years and now is 470..... thats fully comp protected no claims by the way

That sounds like a plan you need to check out Stebbi. Then you can mod it properly!

Just tried CIS.

they wouldnt insure me because I'm 18. so i changed it to being 19 and they wanted 1120 fully comp

that was in my mums name with protected NCB

Tesco: wont insure me at 18 but its only 652 when I'm 19, cant wait for my birthday woooooooo thats pretty much half wt I'm paying now (fully comp with protected no claims)

Do tesco give named drivers their own no claims?

if they do I'm in love with them

This dont pass mate!

my friend bought a mk4 fiesta which came with standard ford alloys (which at the time we thought were on there from factory) he had a wack in it and the insurance man came around and ion his sheet of paper it sat it had steel wheels so he had to pay £400 extra for some thing. and i can honesly say neither of us knew any diffrent!

You need to declare...if you can't afford to add the parts then don't. Simple as.

wasnt a case of cant afford to, more of no1 wanting to insure me with mods due to age,car and current insurance company

I try and pay as little as I can.. I'm sure if people could get away with not saying they have coilies and not saying debagged grill etc etc they would..

So really this is

you have to declare a de-badged grill? omg its onli like £25 n changes nothing handling or performance wise (i dont have a debadged grill as pic shows but i am slightly suprised)

But in theory you are making your car more disirable and apparently this makes it a better target for thieving twats.....

See it from their eyes.... you have a standard polo and one which is slightly modified....of course they would go for the modded one.

That's my thoughts anyway

There is a reason for it. They don't just do it without reason.

If you had a crash that was very serious and your car could not be moved by yourself and it was taken away on a flat bed to where ever, then you couldn't take it off anyway.

People always make the mistake of crash being down to bad driving on there own part. But accidents can happen for many reasons, bad road conditions, oil on the road, someone stepping out in front of you, someone pulling out of a junction badly etc. You crashing into someone is only one scenario!

If you can't get insured for it, don't do it. Simple as.

Yep it all makes sense.

As i said above i'l probs change to tesco in aug as they allow mods, and just leave it for now, if anythin it means that i'll be able to save more n hopefully if i get this job I'm wanting in aug then i might either keep the valver or just get a gti, obviously dependent on insurance.

Just have to wait, but wil b worth it

do you have to declare a debadged grille to the insurance? What about changing indicators from the original orange style to the clear style?

Yes you should, it won't cost much but would cost you a LOT more if they decide not to pay up. It may even be that they don't increase the premium but even so you need to tell them.

So what if someone robs my front badge. (if i had a badged grille)

Technically debadged :unibrow:

LMAO James.

As i said last time i was round yours Stebbi. Just get rid of it for a decent price with the amount of money uve spent on it, and then get a smaller engine'd 6n if your wanting to mod.

If not, just keep the valver but obviously keep it standard.

i thought cis do allow mods. few people have told me this.

or are you not with cis :?

Hes not with CIS. He tried it but they wouldnt insure him because hes only 18.

Declare

Nothing better than driving about knowing you are fully covered.

Its not even worth running the risk of getting NOTHING back on your car for voiding your policy in the event of a write off.

We all like to save money here and there but not declaring mods is somewhere you shouldn't cut corners.

If your insurers wont insure you with mods, either change company or just wait.

I pay an extra £200 so I can have a modification policey with Brentacre. I have a horse power limit but all mods are declared at no extra cost. I have alloys, big brakes, H&R, wishbone subframe and a number of other mods declared...they aren't even on the car yet...I'm ahead of the game.
