1.3 8V G40 ---> 1.4 16V G40

Featured Replies

hey all,

I just bought a 1.4 16V AKQ head for on my G40 engine, but I need special pistons for it. does anybody have experience with this kind of conversion and know what kind of pistons I need and where I can get them or have them made?

Thanx

I haven't heard of this done yet i have to admit, wont be much help but hope you dont have to have custom ones made otherwise get out your chequebook!

why not go for a bvh?

bvh? which one is that?

I think he meant AFH cylinder head. I think there is another chap from the Netherlands on this forum who has this PY/AFH combo up and running or was it a G40 charged whole AFH engine?

Or Big Valve Head

Or Big Valve Head

True

Charged 16vs sound like a good plan, but I'd like to see some evidence of the advantages over 8v.

oh that's the polo 1.4 16V head..

well this head has been modified so it fits perfectly on the G40, the waterchannels and such have been modified, so it's less work to be done ;)

Now the only thing that remains are the pistons. I cannot use the G40 pistons because my compression will drop more than I want to. And they don't fit prefectly too :)

You only have to look at the Golf GTI G60 vs Golf G60 Limited (215ps standard) to see potential gains. Probably best to use a turbo to see more bang for the invest costs with the mods needed for the polo engine.

How much power do people want!?!

LOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDDSSSSSSSSSSSSSS :)

   sounds like an interesting plan tho mate...

I've been mulling over going down the 16v mk3 route, should my GT engine ever die...

be interested to see how this pans out...

Why not go for a compression plate? Then you don't need to mod the pistons.

He said that using G40 pistons would make the compression too low for what he wants. Using a compression plate will make it even lower.

I misread the original post and thought it was a 16V bottom end too.

The more the better.. :p My goal is 200-220 HP, enough for me :)

you dont need a 16v head for 200-220 bhp! lol

and yes i did mean big valve head.

if you do find out what pistons fit I'm sure there will be a few people interested.

would like to see the advantages of a 16v head over an 8v, performance wise.

You're certainly not the first person to think about it.

I don't think off the shelf pistons to suit this exist, although I guess german websites are were you want to start to look for them.

You might need to get some pistons made up specially.

Yeah I already started looking on German sites :)

I know a company in Holland who makes them but that will be the last option :)

OK I just found out that pistons from a HH engine fit perfectly into the AKQ head.. So now I have to find me some :D

may sound obvious but if youve got a problem with too low compression y dont you have the block machined rather than getting new pistons?? if youre running big power wouldnt HH pistons be too weak? surely only forged pistions will be suitable?? good luck all the same!

HH pistons out of the mk1 polo GT or the mk2 Derby engines will be hard to find, but worth while if cheap enough. If the rest of the car is setup well, then piston meltage shouldn't be a problem. You could always get some oil squirters out of a late 1W engine retro fitted for peace of mind though.
