Basically my cars been in storage for roughly one year while i've been overseas.

But now i'm back i want to get it on the road, now i obviously need to insure it, but i also need to drive to my local exhaust place to get my cat fitted for the MOT.

I was just wondering what do i have to do so its legal to drive to the place for the cat and then onto the MOT centre??

I heard if you book it in then your ok, but i want sure if that applied to going to a garage if its not related to the car failing the MOT.

you have to insure it first, then you can drive it to have work req'd for an MOT, provided its booked in, then you can tax it.

it sometimes seems like a bit of a catch 22. when you do take it anywhere tho, make sure you have all your paper work with you, maybe try and get a written proof of being booked for work too just to keep the po-po happy if you do get pulled.

I had a similar, but slightly more complex situation with a mini once. it hadn't been on the road since the early 70s and i was applying for its original reg, but they needed an MOT certificate... After ages on the phone to the DVLA asking them how i was supposed to get an MOT on a car that basically didn't exist (it came off the road before the DVLA had ANYTHING on computer!)... in the end they pretty much gave me permission to drive it to the mot station...

Insure it, test it, tax it back to the start of the month you're in.

If you've got a pre-booked appointment for repairs and MOT (get them to scribble the booking on a headed peice of paper), plod should be ok about it and just give you a producer, but that's a should not a definate.

Only guaranteed way to be 100% legal is transport it to the exhaust place and MOT station.

I'll be doing this in a month or so.. I'll book it in insure it and drive down quiet roads.

you aren't going to be able to legally drive it to the exhaust place (unless it's the same place you're getting the MOT done) with no MOT or tax.

Also make sure your MOT place has a post office that does tax discs near it because if the car passes you aren't allowed to drive it anywhere without tax. If it fails you are allowed to drive it home again or to another garage for repairs to be carried out.

cheers for that, thats basically what i thought. The only real problem is getting the cat on so i can pass the test. Everthing else is pritty ok if its booked in.
