Had a quick search around the forum but only foudn drips n drabs of info.

Basically the car will shudder when i lift the clutch up going into first in order to pull away. It doesn't do it all the time and i was just wondering whether the clutch is slipping or anything else?

Its not so bad it ruins my driving experience but its pissing me off thinging somethings wrong and also the vibrations give me a head ache!! ha

I've a got a 1.3 1994 mk4 polo, no engine mods just superfical small touches.

Its only started doing it mid december so wondering maybe its the cold? or just something worn due to the age of the car?

Sounds like a worn out clutch. My car did the same when i had to change mine.

yea it totally does it for the length of my journey, just the pulling away (bringing the clutch up). Long journeys aswell :(

If it needs a new clutch how muhc u think it'l be?

my old car done something like this. it was like moving off in 2nd gear.

but when i got my cambelt done it was all gone.

maybe your car needs a good service.

It's the front engine mount. Happens on Golfs all the time. Get one from GSF and your problem will be solved.

Sorry to hijack your thread mate but mk3 does this too, only seems to do it when its cold thou.. surely this cant be engine mounts as wouldn't the knocking/vibration get worse as the engine warms up? Is your clutch pedal quite stiff??

Grab your engine and rock it. If it moves a lot get new mounts. They are cheap and very easy to do.

right given the engine a damn good shake and its not that... sometimes when it does the shuddering thing i can hear something knocking from behind the centre console

The other day i didn't feel a thing it was acting fine and i was happy with it, then today it just starts randomly again lol :(

I'm booking it into the garage if it starts getting any worse unless anyone on here can tell me its something serious that needs looking at right away? :)

Personally, I think its the clutch. The shuddering described in first and reverse gears is typical of a clutch problem. It may be just general wear and tear, particularly if the car has done mainly town driving. However, it could be it has oil contamination from a leaking crank rear oil seal.

@mk3_nath, the knocking behind the centre console you can hear is probably the exhaust rattling against a heat shield or the bodywork.

Unless an engine mount is actually broken; ie the rubber has split in two - it is unlikely that this will be the problem. I had a GT where a severe oil leak had been fixed but the oil had been left for fuck knows how long soaking into the engine mounting bushes. They were literally like black gooey sponges due to the contamination, but the engine still didn't shudder when you pulled away!

well ill have to look into that then cos my clutch is still under warantee...

my car does exactly the same thing, only when its cold though, got told what it was but cant remember, so considering i cant remember it must of been something that wasnt that bad lol

see my car doesnt do it when its cold only once its warmed up

oh and also breadman my exhaust is rattling around a bit at the mo and the sound i hear when the car shudders is completely different it sounds... bigger...

i think i need to get the car jacked up and give everything a damn good shake see if anything is loose...
