Does the registered keeper of the car effect the insurance??

Featured Replies

hi,

Might sound like a stupid question but here it goes anyway,

I've been getting insurance quotes on my mk4 1.4L, basically I'm going to be a named driver on my dads policy but the car will be under my name, the best and cheapest company i found was Admiral so I'm sticking to them. Admiral wont quote a price when I'm the registered keeper but when the registered keeper is changed to my dads name they quote £1,124, which is cheaper than what I'm getting quoted on my own policy. Did this over the internet and haven't called them until I'm fully sure they will insure. So does it make a difference if the registered keeper of the car is not the main driver? Hope this makes sense lol, cheers

kinda makes sense.. lol. only people who can answer that is the insurance company as all have different ideas on things.. ring n find out.

get all the details u can so always best to ring n hava chat. ;)

Some companies don't like insuring people to drive cars where the registered keeper is not the main driver. FWIW I'm with Admiral as the main driver driving my wife's Polo, and they were fine about it. Have you actually spoken to Admiral, or is it just the website that won't give you a quote?

No worries. I had a similar problem with them at last renewal. The quote on the letter they sent look a bit high, but using confused.com I couldn't get a new quote from Admiral or sister company Bell at all. Until I signed up using a fake name and a different house number and found that they were trying to rip me off. The woman in the renewals dept was quite amused at what I'd done and matched the online quote and added legal cover etc as well. Strangely the website was fine with me being the main driver on the wife's car.

To be honest i thought the main driver always had to be the Registered Keeper. I'm sure my boyfriend had to make the car change hands from his parents to him before his insurance was valid.

But everyone might be different. Luck of the draw.

I think some companies will do it, but you need to ask around and have a valid reason - like I'm planning on going travelling for a year or so soon, but will need to have my car insured at home so it can be taken out every so often, given its service and MOT etc and be ready for when I come back. So hopefully someone will let me insure it for my dad but let me keep the car in my name (no use me being on it when I'm out of the country!)
