Hi Guys / Girls

Can anyone shed any light on cars that are classed as CAT D's as into if it effects insurance, resale value etc, Also is there anywhere i can check a registration to see if i car is registered as CAT D.

Any help would be appreciated.

Category D is most likely to be nonstructural damage and should be relatively easily repairable. In this case the vehicle may have been economical to repair but for other reasons it was written off. For example where the insurer have to provide a courtesy car the time taken to repair the vehicle would mean that the courtesy car cost together with the repair cost would be excessive. In a category D scenario it is more likely that the insurer did not wish to repair.

I think that if a car is registered as Cat D then it should affect insureing the vehicle but i insured a car this week and later found out it was Cat D but my insurance didn't pick up on it. Selling on a Cat D vehicle usually affects the price but you can get Visco (not certain) tests done which is like an MOT but it is more scrutinised and it inspects the area of damage to ensure it is fully reapired then if it passes the test the Cat D is removed from records.

The only way to check if a car is Cat D or any other Category is to do a HPI check.

A cat D isn't necessarily a bad thing, if you can ascertain what was repaired, and how.

It will affect resale,both in value and time. People don't like them, so don't buy them.

If you are thinking of buying one, I would expect the price to be substantially cheaper than a non damaged car.

I've owned several insurance write offs, and none affected insurance(that i know of) In fact, 2 of the vehicles were subsequently written off again, in non fault accidents, and paid out at market value.

my own polo is cat c (dented wing and bent bottom arm!!) and i have never had any problem insuring it and unlike catc cars catd ones don't get anything stamped on the log book so you can sell it at full market price....

A cat D will still shopw up on a HPI report though, so will affect the value

I think mine was a CAT D, but according every database i tried the car doesnt exisit anymore, so its probably crushed by now
