As topics says, I'm picking up some 14" 6J steel wheels and wondering if it is possible to get any stretch and what type of tyre would be good.

And does anybody have any info on spraying steel wheels? Would i be able to do it myself? Would it be costly to get somebody else to do this for me?

Looked into this also matey, it is possible but i think in most cases at the sacrifice of grip. What you really want are some 165/55/14 Bridgetone Potenza's, basically the same tyres on the sebrings but in 14's. Look just how 165's do on 15's but they mega rare and hard to get hold of.

Other options are 155/55/14 which come in ditchfinders (nankang's) and other cheap jap makes.

You may wanna pop round BJV Enginnering in hemel, they only charge around 30 a wheel for paint.

Or if you could spend a little more i think Wicked Wheels in guildford do it for about £40 a corner. Not sure bout the tyres though!

Why do you want to lose contact with the road? I dont understand the logic of stretch on a 6J, it will grip just like it did on standard wheels - shite. Get some continental sport contacts in 195/45, they look great and will make your car handle brilliantly.

Not too fussed tbh, dont really push my GT at all. Gone are the days of that!

Stretching looks daft if the wheel is to narrow. Looks like your car is wearing high heels.

I have got 185/50 on my gti steels on my GT. Got the contis for a good price too, but don't think they are that great. in future i would keep the same size but maybe go for some yoko's.

As for painting them, depends if you want a mint job or not? these are just winter wheels for me so wasn't too worried about a little bit of rim damage, so i just fixed it the best i could and painted them like i would any panel on the car. They look good (until real close up as the bit scuffs show) and the paint has lasted really well in 6 months so far.

I'm still of the opinion that 195/45's are touch too big for 14'' 6's but its down to personal opinion.

I think 185/50 are the optimum.

The conti's i had on my borbet's just looked over weight against the wheels width, oddles of grip but i was never happy with the width, looked saggy. I think conti's are on the fatter side so a toyo t1 for example would look better as they are overall narrower.

Stretch on a 6J rim really does mean grip will be back to standard forms so guess its your decision.

Tav: that G40 you've posted looks hard as nails, what sus kit is it running?

I was going to get 185/50's but the tyre choice is shit. I saw that G40 with the 195/45's on a 14x6J Compomotive MO and though right I'll 'ave 'em!

That G40 really rocks, as they should be in my book.

I'm with you on the no dish tuck stance, was the aim with the sebrings on my mk3.

You've gone for a good choice with the T1-Rs, they are narrower than many others but still plenty on tread on the ground. Had them on my estorils way back and was mega impressed, great wet tyre too. Nice and square on a 6J rim:

Doesnt the GT look diff there!? Original wing mirror's and i guess thats when it was down 40mm?

Anyway been on the BJV Engineering website, its saying they only charge 24quid per rim under 16" for a refurb with paint and lacquer, is that correct stu? May pop down there if so.

Picked up my steals today, thinking about getting the sprayed plus they do need a little bit of a touch up

165/55 is what i'd go for. 195s look too wide on a 6j rim and mk3s handle just fine on 165s, well as fine as a mk3 is ever gonna handle!

I had 165's on a 6J and i thaught it looked sweet ..

Handles well on a Mk3 aswell
