i would laugh but i have done the same bein towed off a petrol forcourt pointin toward a pump!

I hear what you're saying, but every car for about the last God-knows-how-many years has had a steering lock on it, and therefore even the most inexperienced driver knows that it engages when the ignition key isn't in. So he is a spanner of the highest order.
