Hey all,

been a member on here for a few weeks now, gather info etc. I've just finshed my conversion and took it for spin today. Still got some niggles but when its goes right it proper shifts!

got the car two weeks ago today, with a knackered 1.3 in it....

pulled it out the day i got it and the insides of the motor looked like this:

empty bay... pretty gross...

it now looks like this (photo's taken this eve) please excuse the messy bay, still needs the wiring and fuel lines tidying up, but will do that when i've got it runnin 100%

I've got loads more pics of the build up etc if anyones interested.

I've got a couple issues however, i'll post some more specific threads in the appropriate sections 8-)

cheers!

awesome mate, seems you didnt waste your time lol

not to keen on the exterior styling but that lumps gonna be a right torquey beast!

Looks good! have you driven it yet?? I'm urrently building an aee with ported head, fast road cam 4 branch and r6 carbs, what have you done to yours? and more importantly what does it go like!!!

cheers guys!

i needed a car pretty quick (i've got a longer term project car on the go still) to didn't want this one to take too long.

yeah the exterior styling is deffo a bit different. you can thank my brother for that, he did it all when it was his car 6 years ago (the cars been passed around a few hands and ended up back where it started!)

Looking good man! Nice to see something different.. Mk2's all the way imo

Your "custom title" (cost of living) had me in a giggle fit.. hilarious

big4244: at the mo its a stock AEE motor, with an ashley 4 branch mated to a stainless system, and R6 carbs.

I've driven it a couple miles today. only just got it running this morning. Got some issues tho, i think it may be because i'm using the dizzy of the old 1.3 as the one that was with my motor was wrecked. Also not convinced i'm giving the carbs the correct fuel pressure, but i can set it up so it idles nice OR so it revs nice... but not both :(

I'm not sure if the dizzys are different or not? oh i think 1-3psi is optimum, did it feel quick though! I'm dieing to get mine in the car

doesnt look like your dizzy has an advance retard on it that could be why you can only have reving nice or idle nice not both as the timing is not adjusting itself

looks good though always fancied this conversion but too many projects has always stopped me

well from what i've seen, the dizzy's listed for the AEE are a different part number than the 1.3 dizzys. I'm hoping thats the problem.

I'm using a pump which delivers 7 psi, when i went straight from that to the carbs, fuel pissed out everywhere, so i then put a cheap-o regulator in the line. it goes from 1-5 (i THINK thats psi, but it just says 1 to 5 on it! lol). Only with it set to 1 does fuel not spew out, but then it struggles when revving it. If, when its running, i turn the pressure up to 2, it revs much nicer, but wont idle. When it cuts out, fuel starts spewing again.

I can't get less than 12 degrees advance on the dizzy without removing the bolts and turning it further, and when it revs it doesn't seem to advance itself.

Hmm dizzy does look suspect. If it was me I'd be looking at mappable ignition anyway...

look fab :)

are the 1.3 dizzys vacum advance or weights inside? i know the aee is weighted, can you not put the regulator on 1.5psi? and when u say the fuel pisse out, where s it coming from?

my old 1300 in my jetta was a vacuum advance, but the one i'm using was from a mk3 polo i think (it had some crazy black box ECU looking thing :?) and isn't vacuum.

Yeah 1.5 is about the limit before it'll pee out. It comes from below the plastic trumpets, it fills up in there and then begins pouring out. I may have a better pic of the carbs, if so i'll show you where i mean.

My 1.3 carb Golf has vacuum advance and mechanical (spring/weight) advance I believe. It's also got the TCI or whatever it's called, which is the switching box thing  I don't really know a lot about them.

All Mk3 Polos have ECU controlled ignition apart from the NZ which is vacuum advance so I don't understand how you could be using one from a Mk3? As the same ECU also controls fuelling?

As I said, I don't know a lot about ignition components at the moment, but if I can be of any help I'll try.

another question, what loom are you running? and have you got the fuel pump to a permanent live or ignition live?

hmmm. thanks for the info toby.

The previous owner replaced a blown engine with one from a mk3 polo. it was carbed, but had a crazy carb with loads of wiring assoc. with it, so he used an inlet mani and carb from an older 1300. I'm pretty sure the engine he got had a dizzy AND this ECU. I helped him a little with the conversion and this did confuse me, if it was carb and dizzy, what was the ECU for?!

I know of a AEE'd mk4 polo at a local scrappies so may see if i can get the dizzy off that.

EDIT: its the standard loom thats always been in the car... only about 5 wires for the whole engine bay! The fuel pump is on a switch on the dash. permanant live would put it on constantly :?

swweeeet!!! what kind of power are you runing?

Thats ok i thought u might have put it to a permanent live, Id try and get an aee dizzy to start with, what have you done to the carbs as in needle lift jets and main jet sizes? if there too small that might muck you around

Yeah, the Mk3 engines still use a distributor but there is no vacuum advance on them because the entire distributor is controlled by the ECU, as I understand it. You can map the ignition and fuelling on them anyway.

Was it definately a carbed engine, and not just a single point injection? They do look similar. But yeah, the Pierburg 2E3 carb as fitted to the Mk2 Polo and Mk2 Golf 1.3s is a pretty complex thing as well.

My Golf does have a little black box ECU type thing for the ignition, but it is just the transistor switch or something, I'm not certain.

The black thing on the side of the dizzy is the hall sender

yeah, i'll try and get the right dizzy first and see what that does for me.

I've left the carbs exactly as they came off the bike. i kinda hoped that they'd run it ok for now, even if they weren't optimum for the motor. There is a bike shop local to me that does a full range of jets for those carbs anyhow... its just knowing what i've got/need.

So is it possible that this dizzy will not advance at all without the ECU thingymabob?

thats the hall sender toby.

i like what you've done to this, looks good 8-)

dam, beaten to it

sounds like you need dizzy and ignition module and wiring from a late mk2 mh c plate onwards then you will have the advance and retard
