oh cool. yeah it makes for an interesting drive... the traction control works overtime! the best is when next to a speedline t5... since this one has none of the extra 'sporty' trim on it, not even got colour matched bumpers, they never expect it! hehe. and then there's the boy racers :D mucho fun...

awesome car! luv it with no bumper's whats the horse power you getting from the polo?

you should make a blog of the build!

Dan

haha thanks mate! its deffo a bit different with no bumpers :lol:

still having a bit of a nightmare trying to get it going good (or AT ALL now!!)

Yeah i'll do a restrospective blog with the photo's i took of the process. have to start it when i'm at home, as i cant access my pictures on photobucket thanks to the stupid college filter :(

wow i just have to say, i really like what you have done with this mate... looks stunning... 8-)

thanks mate! shame it wont run!:lol:

hello mate. just a few questions for you if you dont mind!

the makeshift manifold you are using. am i right in thinking the flanges cut front the standard manifold, and then the silicon tubing acts as the manifold?

where the hell did you find an ashley 4branch for the aee?

and how hard was the overall fitting process of the carbs, i.e throttle linkages etc.

hope you dont mind me asking, would be much help as I'm about to embark on a bike carb'd aee in my mk4 and i am hoping to achieve around 130bhp with a full engine build cams, headwork blah blah blah! (specs are for talking in the pub)

Hi!

the manifold is totally home made, no original manifolds were harmed in the making of it

The 4 branch is for actually for a 1300, but with some minor mods to the block, it fits the AEE.

throttle linkage was a doddle, just using a bicycle brake cable with the 'nipple' on the end machined down slightly to fit the carb linkage.

do not put bumpers on that car...it looks mint

do not put bumpers on that car...it looks mint

cheers dude. and dont worry... even i wanted to put bumpers on it, i cant! there's no fixings, and the rear panel has been modified

all my running problems sorted now :D :D

see my thread in the engine section for the problem/resolution :-D

now a non-runner again after electrical fire :(

what the hell joel? what caused it?

not sure exactly. had an issue with no output from my alternator. was looking into why that was.... went in the house to get some food, came back out a few mins later to find a shed load of smoke coming from the engine bay. I think the source of the fire was the white w/lylac wire that goes to the -ve side of the coil. It appears to have melted all the wires together in the loom... which is re-routed through the wing, so its a wing off and pull it all apart job :(

may need a new part of my loom. its the wiring that plugs in on the right of the two that go into the fuse box.

it runs again now :D :D

but got no alternator currently as the one i had was a dud :(

just needs a couple bits before its MOT. I'm hoping to get to a local VW meet next thursday so had better get a shift on.

also just got this through the mail this morning...

going to lose the little hot air take off tube tho as thats not needed for my setup

BADBOY!

no bumpers FTW! makes the bready look moody :thumbsup:

cheers 8-)

thought i'd put up the pics of the conversion process for future reference :D

some of these pics i have posted before, but i'll collate them all here too:

i got the car back to my house on the friday evening, had to push it, but it wasn't too bad as the previous owner loved only a few houses away

this is a pic from that night:

shockinly bad quality these pics are from my phone :( sorry

I didn't take any pics of it in the daylight as saturday morning i did this to it:

This was what was inside the sump of the 1300 motor that i pulled out:

that was all for that weekend, but first thing next saturday i went to a scrappy with my brother, and picked up a 1.6 8v from a Skoda. Forgot to take any pics before the strip down and clean, but it looked horrible, as a 10 year old engine would look really

Got to work on it with the degreaser/wire brush/hosepipe and then gave the block a nice coat of black hammerite and VHT silver'd the head and 'box. Also polished the cam cover up a bit (which i rushed and wasn't too pleased with) and added a pinstripe (which wasn't finished in these pics.... still needed excess paint removing)

not a great finish on it, but i'll work on that after it running again.

here's the carbs i was fitting, from a 2000 R6

bikecarbs.jpg

left it for that weekend looking like this (couldn't help but put the grille and plenum cover on :oops: )

newenginein6.jpg

next couple evenings i worked on getting the manifold made and getting the carbs fitted

this was the first stages

polowithcarbs2.jpg

two of the 'stumps' made and tacked together

not much room in the garage with my brothers project and my other project in there too

polowithcarbs3.jpg

the other two stumps made up and the carbs mounted for the first time.

i later learned that i'd need to make some modifications to my setup but i've not uploaded any pics of these yet.I got these done over the next weekend and had a chance to fire it up. not too bad timescale really i dont think. from knackered 1300 to bike carbed 1600 in 15 days :)

The stumps are about 20mm long, and the silicon hose is 100mm, so there is quite a gap. when i tried to run it, the hose was just sucking flat on each cylinder, creating a vacuum rather than sucking in fuel/air :(

This was easily sorted by using short bits of tube the same that the stumps were made from, to bridge the gap between the head and the carbs.

After that i managed to get it to run, but it was all over the place with the tickover. It was air leaks galore. :( I thought the the silicon was rigid enough to hold the carbs steady, but as the engine rocked about, they were slowling working loose, causing bad air leaks.

Again, a pretty easy fix, i made up two brackets to hole the carbs steady, and tight to the head, and to make ensure there was no more air leaks, i put a bead of silicon around the manifold and the carbs before i slid the hose on.

Since then all had been ok from that front. But just had a few problems with a misfire at high rpms which may be down to the fuelling, but want to elimate possiblilty of it being ignition related first.

Not had much progress on that lately however, as it was a non-runner again after little wiring incident. Sorted again now, but need to get it back in the garage for a few things; they guy i've borrowed the exhaust mani off needs it back, so i bought a new one (pic of it a couple posts up ^^) but its an engine out job to fit it. While its out, i'll tidy the wiring in the bay up again, and give it another good clean. Then it needs a new cv boot for the MOT. and i'm going to fit new disks as the ones on it are a tad worn, and i've just bought new shocks from phil which i'll fit at the same time

oh, i have fitted a new rev counter in the meantime :D:lol:

I'll take some more photo's of the upcoming work... :D
