Polo PP Demo Car #1

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Been keeping the latest developments under wraps until the rolling road day last weekend :-)

After finally getting my throttle bodies engine running and having driven it a few thousand miles, I drove Andy's polo. I'd always liked the progressive power of a well tuned n/a motor but Andy's turbo was just as smooth- but a dam site quicker! So, I set about finding an engine when a friend said he was looking to sell his G40 complete with PSD Turbo conversion- great :-)

As you can see when I got it, it was a slight mess, aside from a huge oil slick underneath the car, there was no water cooling to the turbo, no dumpvalve, and no oil cooler- not my idea of a conversion, but hey! So I set about taking it all apart, building it back up (and tightening the bolts on the way...) So it was something like what it should have been.

First port of call was welding the chassis leg up- I had a subframe in the pipeline for it, but until I could get that on I didn't want the chassis to split, que Mathers & welder:

Stiched chassis leg and strengthened leg:

Also re-sprayed some of the engine bay as there where a few rust scabs, by no means a prize paint job, but nevermind.

The underneath of the car was covered in oil this was just after a few thousand miles of driving:

Happy to say the car doesn't leak oil at all now the sumps been off and re sealed, and the oil drain has been fixed, the compressor housing seeps slightly but I can live with that.

After finding some loose flywheel bolts I decided to take the sump off and re-torque the bottom end, last thing I wanted was a rod through the block...

All painted and GT alternator added (to stop the boost pipes rubbing)

Engine in place:

All in and plumbed up:

Snapped a CV joint so replaced that, and have been tweaking since then.

Couple of Pics (thanks TEJ)

As ever it's not finished- will have a subframe at the start of Feb and a Gripper LSD (should help traction somewhat)

Here's the power graph from the weekend- unfortunately we couldn't stop it wheelspinning on the rollers (due to my wheel alignment being out) Hence the lower than expected power figure (should be over 230bhp on nitrous) but I'll get that sorted and book another session on a dyno.

That's the story up till now, let us know what you think- any questions just ask :-D Haven't written the full spec up as will take me ages

Cheers

Pete

damn thats fast

fookin yeah.....had an inkling a turbo conversion was imminent.... looks well very good engineering. top job

Could't get traction on the rollers in 5th! and the noise it made.......... What a Beast! :-)

Absolutely awesome, wish I'd been there to see it!

There better be a Polo Show this year as I want to see this car.

It looked a bit of a state when you got it though, good work getting it together.

Photo with the Nos is good, like a trademark...you've prob. inhaled too much of it.

Very very nice, just out of curiosity what brakes are you running or intending on running on this?

makes such a sweet noise running too

car was crazy yesterday Yoof... good job for sure 8-)

Monsters Inc.

Awesome

nice work! wen you are dun with that engine rip it out and ill av that of u!!!! lol

Stunning...

Nice work Pete, very impressive car spec wise  One day mine will be a similar spec to that minus the NOS.

Good luck with it mate.

absolutely love the sound this makes

a great car as well, your engine building is always top-notch

Currently 256mm with 22mm master cylinder... although I've got some 4 pots on the way (which will be the start of our kit in 256mm form)

Thanks for the comments guys, means alot :-) Raced andy's saab on way back from rolling road, pulled away until his speedo read 140mph then he started to gain back (Saab is 270bhp and 315lbft!)

Can't wait to hit Santa Pod soon 8-)

Yoof. i really like what you have done to this car mate. in fact so much its the only car i took photos of. I'm seriously interested in doing something like this one day, although i know fuck all about how to go about it. one day you may send me a break down of what goes into such a thing :-p Seriously though i think its soooo much better than the G lader setup, just look at the graph people!!!!

here's a couple of pics from me.

Awesome, what else can you say!

Awesome, what else can you say!

thing is the more i see of stuff like this the more i wanna sell up, buy a shitty 1 litre, send some emails, make some phone calls and get to making something like this. the gains these boys are getting without vast amounts of money (compared to eaton kits etc) it just isnt worth the money to do owt else. thats the impression i get.

highly impressive stuff! esepcially those figures 200bhp out of a 1.3 is seriously impressing!

True, now a fair few people have done the conversion it's got alot easier, however Andy's is still the only one I've seen with all the necessary add ons (water cooling, oil cooling and dump valve) the other K03 'conversions' are time bombs in my opinion. Power delivery is best described as a big GT, in terms of drivability low down (and off boost) and the noise level (or lack of), I do love a G-Lader whine, but a turbo on full chat and dumping 22psi has it's own appeal :-)

Have thought about bigger turbos as quite a few people run (gregg, marshall, james etc) which have a larger amount of top end power (mine does tail off) but this also depends on cam choice, and obviously bigger turbo = more lag (generally speaking). I've a fair few more refinements to make I've discussed with Andy, but we're both trying to achieve the same goal, a fast raggable polo which is near 100% reliable, which is a far cry from welding a dustbin turbo on and 'windin da boost up'
