Just wondering what I need for my GT Coupe to make it stop like a G40, callipers, pads, discs...

I know the G40 stuff is vented but anyone selling this gear or where do it locate some

Also, are there any other GT's on the island of ireland! I've only ever seen two and I've owned both of them! (one is now the size of lunch box, thankfully the other one is minty)

You need VWII callipers and then the Pads and the vented discs. you can uses your existing carriers.

They pop up time to time on here for sale or on ebay or you could by them new if you dont mind spending the money.

Can be found on mk1 golf GTi's , the calipers have VWII stamped into them in big letters. You can find them in scrapyards, though they aren't massively exppensive from GSF iirc. Over here i paid £52 for brembo max discs, which are vented and grooved, and just short of £20 for some decent G40 pads. The calipers themselves cost me about £30 i think.

Also worth considering is the 22.2mm master cylinder found in old passats, it makes quite a difference.

you can also find them on early mk2 Gti's golfs as well...

and some late Mk2 Golf Drivers too, as my Gfs golf has them fitted!

Why would you want to stop like a G40?

Just kidding, a G40 setup is ample for a GT.

Too stop like a G40 you need a piece of slate, or a roof tile will do (this is to be used as the disc) and two slices of thick cut bread (these are the pads) and hey presto......brakes like my G40!!! Only kidding they aint that bad

Try ebay for them. www.plateman.com is where i got my last set from. Not road legal i don't think ?!

Yes it is. as far as I know there are no bigger master cylinder for the none servo'ed mk2.

Have to say - this is what you need to stop like a g40, however, if you wanna stop better than a G40 - just change you pads to some better ones. Honestly, I'm running ferrodo 2500 pads on my G40, and i haven't even put vented discs on yet. I'm still running 10mm solid discs and my brakes ar far better than anything i've ever driven to date. I have corrado vr6, with Pagid pads, and black diamond discs, and my current brakes on my G are better than the ones on the raddo!!!

Honestly, if you want the cheapest best option, just get some bloody good pads!!! Couldnt reccomend F2500's any more, they honestly are the best pads i've ever had in a car!!!

This is basically of true. Cost wise this one of the things that would make the most noticeable difference for the least amount of money spent and for normal day to day use will be fine. And yes it would be much better than a std G40. BUT its not the best performing option. To get the best out of the pads (and the braking system) you would need to use vented disc's (with VWII callipers), braided hoses and decent brake fluid.

You say "spend loads of money and waste a lot of time" but really you can buy callipers on here for £20-£30. Really the most expensive part of the brakes would be the pads at £50+ and the vented disc's are only £10 per pair more than the solid versions. And time wise you have to remove the callipers to change the pads so the only extra time would be bleeding the brakes and filling with new (better) brake fluid (which I would recommend you do anyway if you don't know when it was last done) and undoing the flexi brake pipes. And while you have taken them off you could replace them with braided ones.... ok ok its a slippery slope I just can't help myself!!! :) Its just I have the 'whilst its off I just might as well...' syndrome :)

So it just depends on what you want from you brakes (and your mentality) but I think the 2 things that make the most difference are the Pads (as rixy has said) and brake fluid (decent DOT4 stuff). Uprated pads are better because they cause more friction, but more friction means more heat, heat is a the main factor of brake fade. The pads are more resistant to heat and therefore brake fade but your old brake fluid won't be.

Umm a very contradictory post but i hope it sort of makes sense :)

Buy pads and fit them bed them in as instructions and try them and then see if you need to upgrade discs and callipers ( i think not ) brake discs will not get that hot in road use to need vented ones and the hotter them discs get the better they will work
