After reading a guide on it, the throttle body needs cleaning out if the car idle' wierd?

Should i clean it or not if its black'ish inside?

Does it have a coating or not?

Yes you do have to clean it, however, after cleaning you need to perform "Basic settings" on the throttle body to stabilise idle after refitting it to the car. On some new electronic throttle bodies you cannot open the throttle flap completely(90 degrees), as this somehow damages it and it will not function properly again, trust me, i've seen it done. Also, its not just above the throttle flap that you need to clean, its underneath so make sure you remove the throttle body when cleaning, best way, carb cleaner and a toothbrush, continually scrub unit the inside is silver again.

I was just about to make a new post and saw this one, I've got a MK5 1.4MPI and it's idling a bit funny recently, also it struggles to get up to idling speed after starting when cold, ideas if it's the throttle body?

Probably yea.

I used a full can of carb cleaner on it and its silver again haha.

Sorted out the idling too.

What model have you got James? Don't fancy taking the throttle body apart on my MK5 and fucking it up! And mines got a oily substance around the pipe that the air box fits too any ideas what this is, going to clean it off anyway.

If this pipe is a rubber one then its the breather pipe, what you can see is a build up of oil as the oil fumes exit the crankcase (block) the be vented back into the throttle body, just to avoid venting them into the atmosphere.

No, i meant the main metal pipe that the air box sits on with the flap inside, i know a fair bit about my enigne now but this throttle body business is doing my head in. Which bit is the throttle body? how do you take it apart?

When I first got my Polo 6n2 it idled really iratically, sometimes I would be sitting at a junction at it would sit at 1500revs. It was also really jumpy when rolling at speeds below 25mph. I cleaned out the throttle body which was pretty dirty, afterall it had spent its first 5 years in London, which always makes it worse. Its now fine, apparetly its quite a common problem.

Cheers for that mate, was cleaning it quite simple, did you have to re-set it when you put it back?
