I know people say they're slow and heavy and VW forgot what GTi means when they made it

BUT

Surely they're not so slow that could keep pace in my GT in 5th along the M42? It's been playing on my mind for a while and I'm hoping it was a replica or something...

Theres about 4 billion types of GTI mk4 isn't there? THats what I was lead to believe anyway...

^150 and gti anaversary was 180

they are slow and heavy compared to what else the 1.8t went in... but i cant see your gt keeping pace in 5th against one... probily a replica...

there also very easily tuned.. just a revo chip takes it from 150 to just short of 200

But it wasnt only the annivesry that was 180 bhp i think it was anything after 2002!

I'm fairly sure off the lights i'd do one of the n/a gti's in for a good while

my ex gf had a 1.6 mk4 and i borrowed it once and it didnt even seem nippy in the slightest. in my old corsa i could just cruise next to her when she was gunnin it then just put my foot down to the floor and leave her lol

I was doing 65/70 in the middle lane, just rolling along and this golf comes up on my outside and keeps pulling in front then dropping back next to me. So I thinks sod it and put my foot down, got to about 100 and then backed off cos I like my license but he enver pulled away from me 

Well if it was a 2.0 n/a Mk4 GTI then yes they are piss slow. The 1.8 n/a versions are quicker, and obviously the turbos are quicker still!

Golf's are as heavy as the other othe cars the engine went in TT's, Cupra's, Octavia's etc...only issue was it took VW a while to realise they really need 180bhp and not 150bhp. I'd have one easily!

I've only ever been in the turbo 1.8 and I doesn't feel too sluggish to me.

Beats my 1.8 mk2 easily and that isn't too bad itself.

second to that, the turbo golf gtis are lame!

we pitted a cupra 156 against the golf and the cupra stripped it, the golf is a really nice and comfy car but it is very slow!

we kept up with one (and it is a turbo) in a new astra sport hatch 1.6 (110bhp)

id go for the ibiza anyday!

No late spec. cars come with 180bhp engines too...and 180bhp in a Golf feels pretty nippy...230bhp is S3 territory, so how can that be boring?

my dad has a 1.8 turbo and its not tht bad, but then uncle has a cupra 225 bhp and that feels alot quicker

i didnt find an s3 to be blindingly quick in a straight line either. its the weight of them + the smoothness of the power i dont like i think.

S3' do 0 - 60 in 5.7 secs, thats not that slow!

i meant the old shape. the new ones might be quicker. even the old ones weigh over 1400kg. and most have 225bhp. just feel numb. :-)

I never saw the point of all those versions of mk4 gti. VW made a massive mistake with that, and also the fact that visually all mk4s look pretty much the same (and before anyone says, I know there were deeper valances in things like the anni). To me, the gti should have one engine option (+ one diesel option) and be what they used to be - the flagship model, the *hot* hatch, and when you see it, you know instantly that it's the gti - but without looking like a chavwagen.

and a £500 mk2 valver could wipe the floor with most of them
