1.8T versions are a bit more brisk, especially the 180 which is pretty quick.

From what I can find the Golf only 1289kg's...which for the size/age of car isn't really that heavy at all. Most modern hatch backs appear in the 1200-1400kg range. Heavier than a Mk2 or Mk3 yes...but really not that bad.

I doubt they are "that" slow to be honest

My mate has an octavia 1.8t with revo, jetex sports cat and full stainless exhaust, bosch super 4 spark plugs, bigger intercooler and a induction kit that moves the filter right down to behind the bumper (big stainless pipe thing) and a b&m short shifter (not that that adds any bhp its just cool).

He thinks it is running around 220.

I've been in it and it fels really quick and torquey, and pulls steady with no flat spots at all!

only the annis have 180bhp. they are still slow. my mates has 230bhp and it still feels boring. the diesels are a different matter though. quick motors

No late spec. cars come with 180bhp engines too...and 180bhp in a Golf feels pretty nippy...230bhp is S3 territory, so how can that be boring?

i didnt find an s3 to be blindingly quick in a straight line either. its the weight of them + the smoothness of the power i dont like i think.

That's exactly what I think of them.

They are quick but they don't feel it. The car is so comfy and stable that at any pace it feels slow, regardless of how quick it is.

It's not just the weight of them that does it, my dad's Supercharged V8 Range Rover Vogue feels quick even when you're driving it and not a passenger, and that's even more comfy and stable than a MK4 Golf.

I'd rather had a TDI over a GTI. You need something a bit more torquey to shift such a heavy car...

have to agree with quinny its so comfy doesnt seem its going that fast, then you see how well it pulls through the revs

I can believe that. Back in days when the mk4 had just come out, you used to see loads with the double silver badge 2.0 GTI.

I have never heard of an N/A 1.8 GTI though.
