as much as most of you would like to think the opposite coppers are just normal people, i fuck about at work all the time, and in some of my passed jobs that has involved doing shit that in extreme circumstances could of put lives at risk (hand breaking 5 ton side loaders into the parking spaces when i was late for my lunch for example ). some times you need to have a laugh to get though a shit shift, and i'm not under the kind of pressures and dangers that the old bill have to put up with day in day out (add to that that most of the people your trying to help hate you ). i say give the bloke a break, he's risking his life every day trying to help you, can you blame him for trying to have a bit of a laugh while risking his life, its not like any of you lot seem to appreciate what he's doing.

I was going to say - if he's doing some serious speed (68 and 73mph) through an area that is usually marked as 40mph for safety, should he really be taking both hands off the wheel, giving the thumbs up, and looking directly into the camera?

Plus the fact it wasn't just once, but twice he was caught doing it....

Modest mouse makes a good point that its a tough job, and people do do silly things sometimes - but perhaps some jobs if you can't be sensible while on the clock, you shouldn't be doing it?

Fair enough, my two pence is that he shouldn't be slated as much as he has, of course sticking his thumbs up could cause him to crash into a kid running into the road but so could a lot of things some as trivial as thinking about something else or maybe talking on the radio.

Worst case scenario's could happen even if he was paying full attention, just saying he really shouldn't get punished and frowned upon as much as as he has for such as insignificant act.

Whilst he was travelling at high speed would taking your hands off the wheel for a second really distract so much that you would miss a kid running into the road? When I say thank you or whatever I don't loose concertration on the road and I don't get distracted. It was implied that taking yours hands off the wheel immediately takes seconds of your journey regardless of situation, which it simply doesn't.

On the other hand, yes there is so much more that we don't see from the picture- he could of had his hands up, off the wheel for many seconds and yes he could be a incredibly unsafe driver who takes far too much risks and "dicks around" far too much but judging from the picture - it's really not a big deal.

^^^the thing is tho they see people in shit every day, they are probably desensitized to it, i know i'd have to be to get though the sort of days they must have. if i have a bad day at work it probably involves fucking up a few dies and getting shit off my boss, for a copper tho it probably involves scrapping whats left of a small child off the road or comforting a young girl thats been gang rapped. these people don't live in the same world as us, every day they are surrounded by the scum that we try to avoid, yes he fucked up, yes he should of been more sensible, but i think what they gave him was a bit harsh in the context of what he has to put up with every day, add to that the fact the government are trying to rip him and all his English work mate off, it must be a pritty shit time to be a copper, he's probably better off out of it.

So what would have happened if he had hit a pot hole with his hands off the wheel, and car pulled violently to one side, at those speeds he could have come off the road and hit something, pedestrians, properties ect, with his hands ont eh wheel he could at least stand a chance at avoiding those sort of situations.

The legal speed limit of any single carriage way road is 60mph and is reduced to a sensible safe limit by the highway code, hence driving bans and points system rather than jail sentences for most convictions. This allows officers to travel upto speeds of 60mph so therfore he has broken the law and should be banned from driving with the same strictness as anyone else, and face further penalties such as community service or a short jail sentance, like anyone of us woudl receive for the same offence.

you'd be pissed if you where in trouble and phoned the police, but they got there late because they where sticking to the limit, thumps up issue aside he his perfectly in his right to break the speed limit in order to get to a emergency quicker- he's had the training for it and he's most likely had the experience.

well said, i have had every car of mine broken in to and two of which i could see fingerprints on and NOT ONCE did they turn up, even after i chased one guy 2 miles down the road barefoot at 3am with a baseball bat in my hand and i was on the phone to the police telling them and they still didn't turn up untill not that morning but the morning after

they have done nothing for me and i have never once had any support of them when i have needed them,

its not the fact that they are breaking the law its the fact a few people have mentiond including myself that he should be acting professionally and providing the road with not 100% concentration but 110% LIKE THEY ARE TRAINED TO!!!!!

they were probably all back at the station having to sort out all the paper work they have to do. have any of you seen the size of the sheet of paper they have to fill in every time they stop and search some one? its about 3inchs wide and about 2-3 foot long! they have to sort out so much red tape every time they do any thing and they have no way of getting out of it.
