Roll Cage

Featured Replies

Does anyone know anyone who could either make me or have 6 point bolt in cages for a mk3 coupe?

I was speaking to a company but they tried to either screw me over or were just incompetant and dont want business!

Have money and car waiting if needs to be used as a testbed.

Id like the cages to be msa spec, i know the actual setup wont be as is bolt in but i dont think I'm going to go the full weld in way just yet.

If anyone knows anywhere let me know!

Would like to see examples of their work too. Am not looking for a fancy ally showcage, am after powdercoated stell or if right price chromoly.

Cheers

Chris

fabricage are spot on. really nice guys who'll be happy to discuss requirments. They'll do one to any spec too, from show cage in aluminium, to full blown race cage

Demon Tweeks

Demon Tweeks do Sparco, OMP & Custom Cages. Phone up for more options.

I have a OMP International weld-in cage in my MK4. I'm not sure if the same cage will fit a MK3, or if OMP still even do this particular cage.

no it won't and the OMP mk3 cage fits terrible

do they have a website?

Have found a number for someone called peter, thats about it.

Where are they based?

The company i was looking at was mv developments or something on edition but they suck at getting back to me!

Cheers

Chris

None of the OMP cages are a great fit... but unfortunately they're the only cheaper ones around for a lot of cars.

Had the choice of paying £250 for fair fitting 10pt OMP one or £500 for a 6pt pretty good fitting safety devices one in the 205. Went for the OMP.

yeah wasnt really looking for omp, would prefer a custom made one then atleast i know it will fit properly!

What is ment by the cage not fitting properly?

My one is nice and snug! I donk know what it was to fit tho.

calm down mk4 boy, we're tallking mk3s here. the mk3 cage by omp is one of the poorest fitting cages i've ever seen

wow the roll cage people want £1250 plus vat for a 6 point bolt in.

I looked at their previous work and cont doubt the cage will be awesome quality. I cant however see myself paying anywhere near that for a 6 point bolt in cage.

Spoke to mv developments and it turns out that it is fabricage that make their cages. So am gonig to give them a ring now.

Chris

Christ fabricage want £1080 plus vat for a 6 point bolt in front and rear cage.

He said normally £480 plus vat for one that has already been jigged up.

I was hoping around the £480 plus vat mark! haha

Does anyone know of an safety devices ones etc ready made?

Cheers

Chris

at MV, they wanted £1100 + vat for this....

edit

i spoke to saftey devices before, and they said they dont make the cage anymore, but if there was enough interest they would make some

I don't think it's just mk3 polo ones, I was talking to a few french hatchback owning people at a track day and they said they thought OMP cages were shit too and that the mounting plates quite often have to be modified or re-made. Pretty much the same things I've heard about OMP cages for mk3 polos. I guess they just make them to fairly poor tolerances so it's pot-luck as to whether you get one that fits well right away.

I've got a Safety Devices cage in mine and it's great. But I was lucky enough to get it just before the company went bust and restarted as "Safety Devices International" as after that I think they put their prices up and have stopped making some of the less popular cages, which will include the polo one no doubt.

safety devices is £750+VAT. tbh those prices youve been quoted arent a million miles away, but seriously try Protection and Performance

what on earth kind of cad package did you attempt to build that cage in? it looks like its made from lego. and i suggest if you want a cage you let someone who knows about cage design do it.....

that was me just playing about with designs

Jesus pinches those are insane.

all i want is just a simplified version of your first one.

how exp are raw materials?

I had to fiddle about with the mounts big time. Load of chopping, adding metal to bits etc, but it will now go in at least!

I bet this was a right headfuck to draw dude ..

Did you do stress and strain calculations regarding the weight of the car plus the velocity it maywell roll at ? Ie the loading on the materials the cage is made of .

Although it all depend s on the strength of the welds also .

I dont think a Mk3 would require such a intensive cage to be honest mate .

bloody hell pinches! Getting in and out of a car with that cage in would require the use of an angle grinder and a welder

raw materials have gone up massively recently with the lack of steel.

i think you will find all three drawings were the same cage

loading of materials? theres only 2 types of rollcage aproved material, CDS or T45. so really someone else has already done that for me.

your opinion of a mk3 requiring such a cage is irrelevant, after youve seen or been in a car touching over a tonne in a forrest and crashed you would realise why modern rally cars have such extensive cages, hence the amount of tubing protecting the doors as the door apperature is the biggest weak point in the shell.

To be honest, its a design exercise i have about 10 variations for my own car which i will be talking about with whoever i chose to build it. at the end of the day, its my car, if i want a mad cage i will have one. plus, i'm 100kg under the weight limit for even getting logbooked, so might aswell have the weight in something worth while.

oh and by the way, heres a simplified version which i knocked out ages ago (just screen grab not rendered like above)

^ That's more like the set up I'd be after...

...depending on how the car progresses and how much time I spend at the track I'm going to seriously consider getting one.

if youve gone that far you might aswell have the twin rear braces off the X door bars to finish the triangulation off, and a "strut brace"

Calm down? I simply asked, what do you lot mean by the cage not fitting? The mounting points? Or are bits too long/short? OMP in general?

The blue cage is awesome. I think its pritty much the same setup they used in the 6n2 rally cars.
