removing them is not really advised as it is the boost return pipes, which has a small amount of oil in it when returning to the charger which serves to lubricate bearings etc..... if you choose not to keep the boost return, you are effectively shortening the life of the charger ........ so up to you but personally i dont think the noise is audible enough to warrant it.....

Thats why you spray grease into the charger to keep it lubed up

If you do remove that pipe from the charger though (and like tommyk said there wont be any oil to lubricate it), you can get some spray lube from pitstop.

You're actually much better off removing it and using PTFE lube in the charger. It'll do a much better job of keeping the charger in good condition than the sludge that comes out of the oil breather ever will! After you've done it for a while, empty your catch tank out and look at the emulsified oil and water shit that comes out, I'm sure you'll soon agree that it's not an ideal lubricant for the charger! Plus you'll also keep air temps down as you're not re-circulating hot air all the time, the charger is always drawing in colder, fresh air.

hoooooraaaahhhhh!!! some1 who knows what they r talkin about!!! I have seen a charger only yesterday that had been run with no BRV pipe, and it was full of shite ptfe crap, was fooked because of this, and had lots of little metal particles in it! I will get some pics up later of y NOT to remove this pipe!

u pretty much just talked a hole load of crap.

since when did ptfe spray have metal particles in it? i haven't removed this pipe because of the noise but it is deffo the best way to extent the life of the charger. my charger had to be repaired because of a damaged air filter and old shit from the breather getting in. sorted now with new charger to go on and a temp repair n the current one for now but even the man who rebuilds these day in day out recommends taking the pipe off. maybe he knows better than you??

or get that Club G40 on the go!

Two of the best mods for the charger: remove the BRV + lubricate with PTFE spray...and a stand-alone oil supply.

Both of which will be happening to my car, when I get the engine in.

Ok ill wait for the pictures from yourself^^ how much is this spray lads??

make sure you get the right stuuf. psd sell it. there are differing types apparently. some will damage the seals others wont.

ad get it from psd then, even if its more expensive, better piece of mind

hi there, the quoted comment was written by myself and my mate on browny's account. He had no part in it, i didnt even realise i was logged on in his account! I was takin the piss a bit, in case you didnt notice!! However, my charger did come off yesterday, and i split it in half. You should have seen the amount of PTFE crap that was in there. Either some1 had run it on a constant feed, or PTFE really isnt that good for the chargers?

Either way, my BRV will be staying, as i'd imagine VW done thousands of hours Of R+D on the charger setup befor ethey put it into production. If they thought it was best to run without a recirc setup, they'd have made it that way. I can unnderstand it from a performance p.o.v but i'd rather let my charger lube itself!

There was metla particles in my charger, which at no point did i say came IN the PTFE, i merely said i had lots of little bits of metal in there?

If u want reliability, and safe knowledge you are charger is ok, then leave the pipe, if you want noise, maybe a small power gain, and the arse ache of keep lubing you are charger (which may be every week, or every month depending on how u drive it) then by all means remove it! I was only stating an opinion - thought u couldnt get persecuted for that? Obv i am not the only one with this opinion, as TOMMYK is also of the same opinion?

RANT OVER AND OUT?!!!!!!!

You need to get the white spray grease with PTFE added. Other aerosol PTFE based lubricants on the high street shelf are not the same.

I'm with you in terms of leaving original and they did the research etc etc but without is deffo the way forward to maintaining the charger to its best. that comes from me, someone who is ridiculously anal about keeping things original. sometimes though, a company wont have thefunding, the time or be that bothered about getting the very best out of the things they use and design. its sometimes not viable. in this case i think a separet oil supply would essentially be the best bet but so would an lsd, an oil cooler, rear disc brakes, wishbone setup, etc etc see what i mean?

MMMM rather confsued..... so taking it off will expand the life or kill the life?? should i take it off or shouldnt i?

If you take it off and keep on top of spraying the proper PTFE spray grease into the charger inlet every 750-1500 miles then in theory with a standalone oil supply your charger should be healthier than if you left it with the BRV on.

I think the main reason VW designed the car like this is emissions and noise!

vw design all cars for people who dnt have a bloody clue i imagine so they can just drive the things

no car comes outa the show room with full potential.

strip it all to bare minimum loose all the bloody greenpeace and easy maintance crap i say. :D

There was metla particles in my charger, which at no point did i say came IN the PTFE, i merely said i had lots of little bits of metal in there?

Mine was the same - lots of grey stuff that looks like shards of metal. It's just dirty PTFE spray. My charger's been checked and it's fine.

Also, when the spring popped off my oil seal I found out straight away when I saw the mess all over the offside shock tower. If I'd had the pipes on I wouldn't have known.

I will be keeping BRV on my g40 as is only way of knowing there is enough lube getting into charger i change oil every 3000 miles (synta silver) no loss of power when on track at 6900 rpm charger is not short of lube unlike ptfe spray did i should i o shit i forgot BANG TO FCUKING LATE

VW fitted the boost return pipe because they had to sell the cars to the general public, the general public wont bother to keep any eye on whether the charger needs some PTFE, they also don't want whooshey noises and prefer more economy from warmer air going in.

If the charger is indeed full of metal particles it's not because of PTFE spray, if someone forgets to keep checking it then it's their own fault.
