Whats this do on my G40 engine

Featured Replies

hi there, the quoted comment was written by myself and my mate on browny's account. He had no part in it, i didnt even realise i was logged on in his account! I was takin the piss a bit, in case you didnt notice!! However, my charger did come off yesterday, and i split it in half. You should have seen the amount of PTFE crap that was in there. Either some1 had run it on a constant feed, or PTFE really isnt that good for the chargers?

Either way, my BRV will be staying, as i'd imagine VW done thousands of hours Of R+D on the charger setup befor ethey put it into production. If they thought it was best to run without a recirc setup, they'd have made it that way. I can unnderstand it from a performance p.o.v but i'd rather let my charger lube itself!

There was metla particles in my charger, which at no point did i say came IN the PTFE, i merely said i had lots of little bits of metal in there?

If u want reliability, and safe knowledge you are charger is ok, then leave the pipe, if you want noise, maybe a small power gain, and the arse ache of keep lubing you are charger (which may be every week, or every month depending on how u drive it) then by all means remove it! I was only stating an opinion - thought u couldnt get persecuted for that? Obv i am not the only one with this opinion, as TOMMYK is also of the same opinion?

RANT OVER AND OUT?!!!!!!!

Most people dont do it for the noise thats just a nice side effect. I'm sure the developers of the G unit would have loved to run it without the boost return but what engineers and marketing departments want are two very different things. Nobody is having a go at you for having an opinion, but make sure you know what you base your opinions on is good stuff.

I must admit it would be lovely to have the pitsop forum back Dan.

yet again, i state - at no point did i imply the metal particles were due to the PTFE, just said there were lots of metal particles stuck in the PTFE? wish people would read things properly!

G unit developed in early 1900 ish by a french man not vw

I will be keeping BRV on my g40 as is only way of knowing there is enough lube getting into charger i change oil every 3000 miles (synta silver) no loss of power when on track at 6900 rpm charger is not short of lube unlike ptfe spray did i should i o shit i forgot BANG TO FCUKING LATE

It's only the same as having to remember to change your oil at 3k tho. As said the oil that comes out of the throttle body is shit, oil and water combined, all sludgy and not really that good for the charger. I've ran the BRV on Geoffrey's engine now for thousands of miles and the charger was still as strong as ever it was. I would never run my engine with the BRV on personally but it's down to choice at the end of the day.

Hmm, I'm not sure that he was around in the 80's when VW used his design in their little polo. He may have designed the charger itself but I'm pretty sure he wasnt there developing the way it bolted to the engine.

with the risk of sounding a bit simple here.... whats the oil feed pipe for other than lubing???

it lubes the bearings which are sealed - not the apex seals

but the g unit is indeed the charger, not the complete package? Cant imagine they had such luxuries as PTFE spray back then, hence the oil mist way of keeping it lubed up! I'm stickin with mine, might go on a RR day, and do 1 run with and 1 run without, see if there is any power gains to be had - FAILING THAT its stayin, lol

It wasn't untill the late 80's that it was possible to manufacture the g-lader supercharger to the tolerances required for use in an engine. It may have been a french man that came up with the concept, it was Volkswagen who made it work.

The recirculating boost has more to do with emissions control than anything else. We all have the luxury of not having to apply with emissions controls in the same way Volkswagen did. If you found PTFE in the charger that's a good thing, shows that the spray has clung to the charger and is still lubricating it. If there is LOADS then it shows whoever owned it previously put a bit too much in.

Steve at PSD wouldn't sell the PTFE spray and do this modification if he didn't think it has some benefits. After all he's the one that is probably having to service the majority of superchargers in the UK, so he should know better than anyone what sort of condition they are in.

PTFE is better than a messy solution of oil and water ---> fact

Oil reduces the octane rating of fuel ---> fact

Cold air is better for performance than warm air ---> fact

Boost return sounds good on over run ---> personal opinion

rixy = stubourn ---> fact

Between Stuart and Del I think they put 30k on a charger using PTFE and it's fine. I sold the BRV hose a long time ago.

TAV DRIVES POLO GT !!!!!!!

And you're continually being antagonistic. Calm down. It's only the internet.

I'm thinking of doing the brv mod for a little while to see whether i like it or not. but need some advise.

Where do i get a nice looking catch tank?

where do i put it?

Can i buy a blanking plate?

and must i remove the charcoal canister?

any advise to make this look as nice as possible would be great.

Tav also has two G40 engines sitting in his garage and is currently building a G40 conversion from the GT...

I'm with you on making it look nice Dan. I was thinking of removing the charcoal canister and getting a catch tank to perhaps fit in it's place. Then it's hidden under the air box, bonus. That or I'd get as OE looking a tank as I can find, have it painted satin black and pop it somewhere discrete.

I think PSD might do blanking plates?

neatest i managed was with an induction kit heat shield which was modded. I sold it to dk not sure if he has pics of it

would this be ok??

I'm not stubourn, i simply have an opinion, and I'm sticking to it, whether u think your idea is right, or i think mine is, who r you to decide? opinion is exactly what i is? obv in your opionion, i am stubourn, and in mine..................

Anyway, lets not turn this thread into a competition into who's knob is bigger eh, lol

The lad simply wanted to know what the pipe is for, not a 5 page argument into whether to remove it or not!

in my mind it only became an argument because total utter shit was being told.... DON'T GIVE OUT DUFF ADVICE. IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER THEN DON'T ANSWER -SIMPLE!!!:lol::lol:

the metal bits in yr charger will either be cos yr charger has injested something from the air - or the centre bearing is worn causing scroll to rub casings (caused by leaving service too long)

either ways its bits bits of worn off charger.

That sort of tubular shape is nice, would be good satin black...I think that's the sort of thing I'd be after personally.

i knows this now mate, as i say, had it apart, and figured that out now, lol

At least we been providing some riveting entertainment for othr peeps eh, lol!

So with this BRV mod, whats with them kits on fleabay which are advertised as dump valves?

So with this BRV mod, whats with them kits on fleabay which are advertised as dump valves?

i think they double up as a blanking plate, but just make a noise, need someone to verify that though. has anyone actually got one of those fitted?

and for £30-£40, is it worth it ?????

If i did the BRV mod, would i have to run a seperate oil supply straight away or could i just use the lube every 500miles?
