The G40 is not idling great. Sometimes when in neutral the engine revs drop low, battery charge light comes on and it then dies. Also sometimes I notice that the lights get brighter when I rev it. Would this be the alternator needing to be replaced. Also is there a specific one from VAG for the G40 and does anyone have the part number?

bad earth maybe ? I had a similar problem and it was a wire goiung from egition to relay on ecu so i replacedit also did the blue temp switch to be sure

Might be that the idle is set too low?

If you want to check the alternator - get a voltmeter (available for £5-£10 from maplin etc if you don't have one) and measure the voltage across the battery terminals (should be around 12.5 to 13V with the ignition off).

Start the car, if the alternator is working fine then you should now have around 14.5V reading on the battery. If you have 17V then your voltage regulator has gone (£10/20 part to replace), if you have about 12V then your alternator needs replacing as it's not producing enough voltage (can get reconditioned ones from gsf car parts for around £85).

Note: worth checking tension of alternator belt as well as a loose alternator belt will mean intermittent/less voltage getting to the battery from the alternator.

(Just replaced my voltage regulator then alternator myself on mk mk3 polo genesis - full power now!)
