Hi guys! Just thought ide say hello and post some piccies of my MK2 Saloon! haven't had the car long and only bought it as a run around as it had mot and tax but I've become quite fond of the funny looking saloon :-)

MY real names Chris and I live near Stoke-on-Trent. I used to have an MK2 Golf GTI but the engine gave up and I needed a car there and then for work so had to sell for spares rather than fix :( Was a lovely car but just didnt work out.. for a few cars later I've ended up here!

I always considered getting an MK2 breadvan for a little project but never really got around to it until now but decided i couldnt resist the saloon as ide never seen one before :-D

Anyway, piccies :

Sorry about the crap quality! Recently sold my Nikon D50 and am now stuck with some random unbranded cheapo cam that doesnt seem to have much of a white balance control Twill do for now :-)

I just came over from uk-polos.net... There doesnt seem to be much going on over there so I've signed up here! Seems alot more active anyway :-D

Plan for the moment is to jsut drive it :-) MOT is up mid march so if it passes then ill treat it to a goof service.. if not ill see how much its gonna cost me to sort Wouldnt mind a set of coilovers on some ATS Classics but thats something to think about after the MOT

Leave the interior like that. I love those seats and i have no idea why!! :-)

All i would do with that car is lower it on some understated wideish wheels with suitable tyres, remove the bump strips, get the rear lights tinted all red, get a new front bumper (beevers auto panels), some pressed plates, and get that little bit of rust just under the grill painted up (wouldn't cost much so i would get a pro to do it). Then all it needs is a quick engine bay rubdown and you will have a cracking looking cool as hell car. Keep it simple!!

P.s coilies don't exist for this model of car unless you line your pockets with gold and snort diamonds on a night out!! :-)

You can get low enough on suspension anyways. 60/60 and lowering top caps to level the front....walla!!

Yeah really I want a new front bumper as its cracked under the masking tape. Its had a little knock at some point up front, not with a car but with a post or similar as where the rust is, its been pushed in slightly (cracking the paint) and the bumper mount and front panel are slightly pushed in.. nowt major though.

Was thinking of getting a whole new front panel rather than trying to repair the rust where it is. Its quite bad in the spot and the metal is very soft now.

Never removed the front panel mate. I saw a red coupe with a black front panel and it looked awesome. Was because the owner didn't want to attempt to match the red and mess it up. Painted it black with a home job and it was wicked. Most of its hidden anyways. Depends o the budget i guess. If the panel is damagedi would go for it mate. New bumper with chrome strip is available from beevers auto panels and is cheaper than VW prices by far and wide.

Looks good though!! Sort the front end as you have said and you will have an awesome car. Tint the lights all red though as that looks wicked on the saloon lights!! :-)

See another thing I did consider was that if i were to replace the front panel, I could smooth it and spray it and then just do away with the bumper completly :

Not to everyones taste no doubt but I like it. I'll definatly be tempted to have a go but whether I actually do or not is to be seen otherwise new bumper and new panel with a nwe grill with red inset and it will look niceeeeee.

Btw, are the door/side rub strips pinned on or glued? In other words, can I take them off without leaving holes in the side of the car?

I agree with Demolover leave the bumpers on!

I had to cut 2 pieces and weld my front panel resulting in me painting it satin black and I put stone chip on the lower valance. Looks pretty good, saved me colormatching. Heres a pick.....

Cheers for that. I can't weld and it isnt 100% necessary to replace the front panel so I think i'll just repair the little rusty bit :-) Might spray it satin/matt black though (not the whole panel, just the lip at the top) as it looks awsome in the pic above. Makes it look like part of the grill!

Just rustproof what needs to be done on the front valance, its only a cheap old Polo afterall

Welcome to the forum.

The bumpstrips qre easily removed by pouring hot boiled water on to them, it softens up the double sided tape that holds them on. Pull them downwards and they won't distort the panels. Clean any glue off thats left the panel with petrol on cloth then polish. Job done.

I dont get the general idea that red reverse lights and indicators is a good thing, i'd leave em be tbh.

The point of using tint spray is that they still flash the original colour. The reversing lights will go ever so slightly pink and the indicators a little more red.

To my knowledge the rear spoilers are now obsolete from the dealers.

Just a little update for today :-D

Been out and taken off the side strips! As easy as was said and looks alot better :-D I polished up the paint with some rubbing compound to get it all one colour, which has worked. Its just come up with some scratches though so need to get something a little milder to properly polish it back to a gorgeous shine again :-D Tomorrow probably
