Firstly what kind of paint are you using? secondly if its a gloss finish its not the type of paint you need laquer on.

metallic/chrome colours lose there shine with laquer an go dullish. normal celluse wont go dull if you spray it on without sandin it down. what laquer are you using?

you can clear coat any paint solids don't need it but it's not a problem to do it

he picked up a tin of matt lacquer lol would be a right laugh

bet your sparying about 12inchs off the panel thats why the shine is going lol

spray the lacquer over the top of your colour coat (solid colour, metallic or pearlescent) to give a high gloss finish.

A lacquer is always used with metallic and pearlescent colour coats, and may or may not be used with solid colour coats...

Mate your a joker you gotta laugh

could also be going matt if its cold where you are working....needs to be fairly warm and warm the tin in hot water first

To fine for clear coat. 1500/2000 wet & dry used for polishing.

Clear coat is used on any paint it can be used on solids. If there is no clear over a solid colour base coat it has no protection, unless you are talking about direct gloss known as 2K then it is protected and only comes in solid colours but still that can be clear coated. You can get hold of 2K clear coat cans and metallics etc from a automotive paint shop. Alot more better finish than celulose.

i'v been doing bodywork for 20 months now and i always finish with 2000 wet and dry ?

though i do use slightly different products to most bodyshops ;)

Chipsaway is'nt anything to be proud of.

have you used the new waterbased system ? it'd one of the best in the world ;)

i admit the old pc system was only good for a quick repar but it's awesome now even pvw staff are using us :)

i'v done morgans porches even been called to do a ferrari 360 modena the other week, then were doin cars that haven't even been registered yet and were damaged in transit, subaru give are details out with all new cars

if chipsaway is a bad thing why do we have such a good reputation and customer database ;)

No offence to yourself intended but chipsaway is a franchise you can buy, you could be a labourer one day and call yourself a painter after a few weeks training.

20 months imho hardly gives you the knowledge required to carry out this job properly, most painters do a 4 year apprenticeship.

You are answering peoples posts when you dont really have the correct training or half a clue what your talking about, in my experience there is nothing worse than coming across a job that has previously been attempted by a chips away technician.

Theres a difference to touching up a small scratch than painting/ repairing a car properly.

For your information i have been in this trade for 18 years working for reputable bodyshops and franchised dealers.

At present i work for the countries leading mobile bodyshop.

gota agree with you there...I've done 16 yrs in main dealer bodyshop and we used to hate going behind chips away and putting their jobs right

the only reason chips away and the like are popular is beacause people are cheap and like a cheapy job

we do not carry out touch ups and although you can buy the franchise it can be taken off you / you may not be able to start if your not up to scratch yes people have there bad days and i have seen some poor repairs but i have also seen some very poor bodyshop repairs

we carry out a full repair on damage but we are sensible on the jobs we take on i.e. we don't take on anything badly dented are most common repairs are vandal scratches bumper scuffs minor accident damage.

yes i know people have alot more experience but i use waterbased paint system now and most of the bodyshop people i have contact with don't have much if any experience with it i do work for a bodyman as if he gets jobs which are better done by me than him he will get me to do them

i know nothing about major damage replacing panals etc but i know alot about minoe damage / painting in general

as the post was only about applying the clear coat i think i have enough experience to be able to answer that question ;)

also depends on the types of paint etc to what you use i have alot of bodysop contacts that help me out and i help them i'm experienced enough to comment on most questions asked on this site.

at the end of the day if chipsaway was a bad thing subaru wouldn't be giving out our info packs twith there new cars, main dealers wouldn't be using us to do repairs on cars that haven't even been registered, we wouldn't have contracts with bt to do all there company cars and many others.

I'm trained in waterbase, qualifications even but they dont mean i can paint but painted alot before i got them. Majority of bodyshops use waterbase! By Law! It isnt that much difference only difference is that its an Ink rather then a paint. Dosnt make you special for using it. Chipsaway is rushed jobs I've seen people take chipsaway jobs back to a backstreet garage to sort it out. Main dealers use them when they sold the car its not there problem nomore its chipsaway problem as they carried out the work. Looks good for period time maybe when the dealer sold it :-D

It can be the best scheme does that make it spot on for every car colour matching i dont think so! Most bodyshops have more than one scheme so the varients can be looked at on all the schemes to see which paint manufacture does the best match.

well i find that funny because i know of alot of body shops that use waterbase now. it came into use a while back and i have also used it myself.

so what your saying is that because you have used waterbase you know about spraying 2k and clear over base?

the technque and application of 2k is alot different to water base and using 2000 before you spray laquer on is way too fine a paper to use, its the kind of paper you use to take nibbs of dirt or dust off before polishing.

i always remember what my teachers at college said to me and that was to stay away from chips away coz its a really poor job and the paint they used is basically better off in the bin.

whats this waterbase scheme your using then?

SORRY MATE I SHOULD NO think about what i am writing before you post, (Solid colour coats) synthneic paint are one of these which doesnt require clear coat, you did save yourself tho with the direct gloss bit which as i said is a sold colour which may or may not need a clear coat

miss read post.

no colour match will be exact it's all about blending

and a chipsaway repair is given a 2 year garentee becouse if it's done correctly it will easily last 2 years theres no difference between bodyshop work and chipsaway work apart from we don't take on anything major

bodyshops can do poor jobs same as anyone it depends on the person doin them

I was on about colour matching to the factory paint work all colours should be blended, you can never do an edge to edge did i even say anything about that. Only on vans because there done in direct gloss. Colour matching is to get the nearest colour on the car thats what its all about. So when its blended the eye cannot detect a colour change. Honestly chipsaway is poor workmanship I've seen there work its not good at all. Bodyshops give atleast 10 years garentee if its thatcham approved etc.

have you used us in the last 4 months since we'v all got a completely new system which is amazing my bodyshop guy even has me go round and mix him some paint up becouse the local paint suppliers are useless at pearls and metalics we can match the paint no problem i can garentee that we even have aceess to the machine which will tell us the exact paint colour that matches and some of the colours that it comes up with are strange but they always match

i don't really think your in a position to comment if you think it's that bad go to an open day and let them do a repair in front of you then tell them what is wrong with it cos i can garentee you won't be able to see anything.

some of the bodyshop repairs i'v see have been awefull and i don't know how they got away with it this includes alot of insurance approved places

if it's really as bad as you say why am i booked up for weeks get loads of calls every day have regular customers which usually have decent cars, i can do repairs for about 25% of a main bodyshop and the customers are always happy.

you can put it down as much as you like at the end of the day people who have used us are extremely happy with the repairs cost ease of getting it done and most of my business is word of mouth anyone can slag anything off but you have not actually come up with any facts to back it up so i'd appreciate it if you keep your OPINIONS off a public forum

Thanks

I know what i know so I'm not really bothered what you tell me about chipsaway I've seen it for myself, customers are happy because they dont understand, if you told them anyway, if it looks ok to there eye then their happy but it wouldnt to a painters eye garentee.

i can say that about bodyshops

go to an open day let them do a repair in front of you i'd be impressed if u could see the repair or any signs of a repair ;)
