Engine Conversion and Insurance

Featured Replies

Just been think about getting another old polo and sticking a gt engine in it (just an idea atm no plans to do anything yet).

If i was to stick another engine in say a 1L to a gt 1.3 how would this affect the insurance??? would the premium go up alot or what?? and what about letting the DVLA know??

I insured mine as a GT, even though it was originally a 1043cc, Just incase the envitable happens (which it did!). When i contacted the DVLA, they require you to provide them with evidence. This can be either:

A receipt of purchase containing cylinder capacity information for the replacement engine

or

Written confirmation from your insurance company.

Admiral wouldn't underwrite my G40 conversion because the car had a non-standard engine in it and they wont go near them. So I insured it with Adrian Flux for reasonable money as a G40 conversion with all modifications noted. Haven't told the DVLA yet as i haven't spotted the code yet. Interesting to hear that they require some form of written "proof".

This is a tricky one for me aswell .

I am going the opisite way to you guys though ..

Iff i was to change a 1.8 16v Gti engine for a 1.3 engine in a Mk2 Golf would the insurance be higher than buying a mk2 golf 1.3 ?

Thing is i have found a perfect shell well its been in the family for years .

I'm not willing to pay £4000 for insurance on a 16v Gti !

Stevie you no longer doing the mk2 polo. Shame on you!! ;)

I will have to declare my engine conversion once its in. Insurance know about it though. Doing it legit!!

There is a mint Oak Green 16v Gti Mk2 Golf in the family

Its like its just rolled out of the showroom totally standard .

Unfortinatly i cant afford the insurance but i will be putting a 1.3 in there ..

 retarded i know but it has been my dream car for ages !

Not changing anything on it though . tottaly oem standard for the win !

I think this proof must only be needed for a capacity change. If you're just converting from a 1.3cl to a gt or g40 or a gt to g40 then the capacity is the same. All you need to do is return the V5C with the new engine number on it. I had no problems doing this.

An engine conversion will make a difference to your insurance. Some companies (such as brentacre who I'm with) will treat the car as the model the engine came from, so my insurance on my gt converted to a g40 is the same as it would be if it was an original g40. Not all companies are like that though, some just run off screaming at the very mention of the word "conversion".

As with all things insurance related the only way to find out how much it'll cost you is to phone up and ask.

I wouldn't bother with the hassle and it will just devalue the Oak Green tax on it, just buy a solid 1.3 Ryder instead. Stick the GTI under a car cover and go back to it when you are 21 or something. My 2p worth

I don't think putting a less powerful engine in would decrease the insurance at all, the car is still a golf GTi. It's a crazy idea, just buy a solid 1.3 they are still out there.
