Basically I'm considering getting rid of the golf for a diesel cos of all the traveling I'm having to do for college.

Not to sure on what are generally good ones though..

So basically around the same cost as the golf to buy, and ideally VAG but would look at others if they are any good. Also I don't particularly want it to be a slow sluggish diesel :p

So anyone got any ideas?

How much did you buy the golf for? Give people an idea on price range...

Some mk3 golfs/passats had TDi engines but not sure how good they are/reliability

If you can find a polo like mine, you're laughing £35 per year tax, 50+ mpg, fairly quick (re-mappable to ~100bhp)

Best sticking to VAG tbh, they seem to make the best diesels (having experience of Vauxhall/Ford/Fiat/Peugeot diesels myself)

oh yea, however much I could get for a 1.8 mk2 golf really. so like £700-600 maybe a bit more if I get some other funds.

its gonna be hard finding a newish car that I can afford so its pretty much old stuff lol

was thinking mk3 golfs, just don't like them that much

yup it is mighty expensive, but at the moment I'm feeling the mpg will make up for it!

Most VAG diesels will run happily on a vegatable oil/diesel mix. That'll save you some cash, plus it's now legal to use upto 2.5k litres a year.

oh and btw diesel in this country is the most expensive in the whole world

That might be but when it does 450+ miles to a tank and you fill it up once a month, you tend not to notice :-D

@ yeha - the older one's definitely will but the newer ones (like mk4 golf/polo onwards) tend not to go for it, don't know if mk3 golfs are the same

yeah true true its all that tax I'm not happy paying to the waste of space parliment though! luckily toppin up isent a regular thing :-)

yea was thinking about a GTD, just finding a good one that can be a problem.

Caddy or the vag 1W engine am not sure they came in though

would love a caddy but I want a slightly powerful deisel

I'm thinking the options are, golf GTD, mk3 golf tdi, and maybe a 306 hdi/tdi etc etc cos I quite like them :p

45 - 50, if I go up and work on the rocco more than once in a month, I'll manage 60 (100 mile motorway trip there and back)

yea thats what I've been thinking, turn away form the normal chav and try some nice simple mods

what about an old passat 1.6 turbo diesel my dad had the mark3 was pretty nippy or you can get an old mk1-2 if you want to stand out

A mate at work says his VRS'll do 50mpg however he drivesd it, shich is quite impressive for a car with some serious 'quickness'!

my mk4 gt tdi golf just seems to go on and on and on....diesels are awesome for mpg

cons though are that they sound like vans!

MK2 GTD with the top mount intercooler is what I run as my daily driver! handles better than the G40, its bigger and I get 45-55mpg - plus it smokes like a bitch and pulls like a train - it does and easy 3 figure cruise and with less than an afternoons work you can get 30-50bhp for almost nothing!

paid 31200 for it just over 2 years ago and its been a beauty!

There is a blue one on ebay at the moment for £350!

seen that blue one on ebay, 200 miles away though which sucks majorly otherwise I would have had it.
