Yeah, that's what progress causes. The car weighs a heck of a lot more though.

Newer cars are getting slower and fatter all the time.

And its not just VW its every single car make.

The one that stood out to me was the new Fiat Punto 1.4 8v

The old 1.4 8v was called the 80 due to it having 80bhp (this is going back 10 years now)

The new one only produces 72bhp, so they have lost 8bhp and the car is heavier!

So stick to the older cars, lighter and more powerful! :)

I'm reading this as the older Mk2 had 72bhp and the Mk3 1.3 had 54bhp. is that right?

As far as I am aware no std UK Mk2 came with 70+bhp. The most was 55BHP.

As for the Mk3 1.3 I'm not sure what the SPI ones are putting out but the MPI ones had 74/5BHP as std (and then you have the G40 at 113-120bhp).

so if i'm reading the statement correctly then his is wrong but some might have the same BHP i.e 55bhp.

Mk3's do weigh more than the Mk2 though (not by that much though (tens of kg not hundreds of kg)).

Theres more scope for an old carb fed mk2 engine to be developing more than its "standard" 55bhp in stock form, than there is a mk3 with EFI to be developing more than standard power

But your freinds comments are wrong

Officially 55bhp for mk2's and mk3 spi's

yep, I'm sure you are right mate... the bigger difference is with the mk3 to mk4...

standard mk2s are 55bhp unless its a G

There was a mk2 that had 72bhp but this was not avaible to the uk this was the GK the one that anyone using webber carbs wants parts from.

what was the 1272cc coupe S, i thought they did a 75bhp engine in them????

They did in in Germany.. sort of... It was a Mk2 GT with 75bhp. UK Mk2 Coupe S's were carb'ed 55bhp.

Edited to remove crap information...

The Continental Mk2 GT Came With a GK engine which develped 75bhp

It used a big pierburg carb

high compression pistons

larger inlet manifold

Semi agressive cam

DIGINITION

And i believe a slightly larger exhaust

thats coz nowadays lots of people want luxury and safety, which come at a price....weight.

luxury and safety is for pussies

Was it a Pierburg? I thought I read somewhere it was a big twin choke Solex.

If it's a bigger Pierburg, I'll have to get me one of them and get some more Pierburg goodness

Pierburg goodness

is their such a thing! i must admit if i had a mk2 i would be wanting to stick a set of bike carbs on it rather than an even bigger pooburg

Nowt wrong with a working Pierburg mate!

That's true, some did come with a massive twin choke Solex carb and a funky air box, a massive inlet manifold, twin down pipe, larger bore exhaust, agressive cam, higher compression, larger fuel pump , different ignition system, 4 speed short ratio gearbox with a tall 4th gear, bulky three spoke steering wheel in black with a large VW logo on the horn, the bolstered interior in what is commonly known as dennis menace trim, large wheel arche trim, tinted glass, rear seat belt guides.

Hypojam is also correct with what he has posted, I beleive that the GK engine was revised through its life and given a 5 speed gearbox and a large pierburg autochoke carb.

That's interesting. I was quite surprised at the exhaust bore on my 1.0 Mk2 and its always gone rather well. I was going to swap on a carb and inlet from a 1.3 but the inlet bore was only 2/3rds the size on the one already on my car.

On another note, I'm quite old and while I was ill a few weeks back ,I am better now. Older must be better.

The GK engine was a 1.3.
